Am I a Flipper?!?

Flip-flap!

I recently sold a bunch of watches, some for less than I bought them for some for more, some I had bought within the year! I wanted to pare down my collection to core pieces I cared about and wanted to wear. Am I a flipper?!?

If so, or if not, why? How do you define a flipper?

Who cares - you kept what you wanted and sold what you didn't. All that matters is that you're happy at the end of the day.

IMO, if you're able to take advantage of supply / demand / current market rates, then you're participating in the beauty of America...a free market.

You bought the watches. They are your property to do with as you please be it a 20 year old sub or a Daytona bought last week. I don’t think you’re a flipper unless you were doing this on a monthly basis but even that I point to my first statement.

This is my view of a flipper, others may have a different perspective.

A ‘flipper’ is someone whose sole intention is to buy and then immediately sell for a profit a hard to get watch from the Authorised Dealer.

If you have a collection of watches and sell some after owning and wearing them for a while then for me you are not a flipper.

OP, you may be a flipper but if you’re selling at a loss I recommend you stick to your day job

No one cares. This little niche watch bubble can distort your perception of reality.

I like this definition. I've always considered myself a flipper, but I buy them to enjoy, and then when I get tired of them or see someone new and shiny that I must have now, now, now, then I'll sell something else.

The one time I bought a watch to flip for a profit, I lost money.

If you're simply paring down your collection then you're a "curator" and not a flipper.

This 100% you don't ever really know if you like the watch until having owned it for some time and tastes change.

If you bought the watch initially just to make a profit, then yes. But in your situation you were just consolidating your collection, so no.

As many have said, buying the watch with the intention of selling for a profit would make you a flipper. Buying a watch with the intention of wearing it as part of your collection, even if you later decide you don't like it, does not make you a flipper.

If someone holds onto a watch they don't like just because they don't want to be called a flipper, then they need some help. (Not saying this applies to the OP, just making a broader observation.) Even people who "never sell, only add" baffle me to some extent. You've never bought a watch and found that you don't like it over time? Or, you keep your money tied up in something you have no interest in wearing any longer?

I guess it's just a different mentality in terms of what a collection is to people. I like my collection to be the best watches I can afford and care to wear. Maybe others like to collect pieces and hold them even if they'll never wear them.
