Shot in the dark

Some of you might already know my journey and how I got my start in the Rolex world. Anyhow, while searching and researching for a watch for dad, I fell in love with the looks of the SS Daytona with white dial. Been dreaming about it since January after securing a Sub for pops.

Told AD about it a while back. Yesterday I stopped by to try on an exhibition model that they have and now I want it even more. I reiterated that it is my dream watch. AD told me it will be a while. I said I definitely understand but see what you can do.

So here is my shot - because if you don’t ask, you don’t get - if any of you fine gents (and gals) on here can help me out in anyway, please DM me. Part of the reason is that I just got a new position at work that I’ve been working on for two years and wanted to do something nice for myself. I will send you a case of one of my favorite Pinot Noirs to say thank you. 😜

Flame suit on and prepared for people telling me to f off. But you really do miss every shot you don’t take so…

You're asking for someone to help you secure a watch that sells for nearly 3x MSRP?

Yeah...good luck with that. If you TRULY need the watch, plenty are available via the greys.

Shot in the dark

If I could help you I would and totally support you putting this out there. No down side to sharing your story and asking. Better to be creative and take an alternate path than to complain about the current state of affairs.

That being said, it’s obviously the longest of long shots and you’d be better served by biting the bullet and paying the ridiculous premium or finding an easier-to-acquire alternative.

Otherwise it’s just pounding the pavement and playing the waiting game.

Good luck. I’m rooting for you.

Good luck. I’d personally just find a different watch to obtain.

I love all these stories about grails and dream watches.

"This watch is my HOLY GRAIL!!!. It's the best looking watch EVER! I would never sell it, and I'd wear it EVERYDAY..............but i need to buy it for MSRP only......."

Seems ridiculous, right?

If it's a grail or "the one".....then do whatever it takes to get it....and that includes paying grey prices...

I'm pretty sure the SS DAYTONA is a grail for many because they are infatuated with paying $13k for a $30k+ watch. That drives them more than anything else...

Better to set your sights on something more reasonable than to ask strangers to give you $20,000 to fulfill an emotional attachment to a luxury good. Best of luck

Thank you good sir! Doesn’t hurt to try alternative routes.

I do want it but I refuse to pay more than MSRP (actually maybe just a bit more but not grey market). It’s just a principle I practice. I can wait as I don’t have to have it NOW. But if I can get it sooner rather than later then all the better.

In response to comments re: asking strangers for $20K. It’s more of paying it forward of sort. It you have an AD who is good and might be able to help out others, why not do that? I have done that for folks on here. Don’t know if anything actually came out of it but I tried. Take a Sub, for example, I don’t look at it as “oh I’m giving them $7K in free money.” It’s not my money when people buy from ADs. Not sure if that makes sense.

If you like the look of the Daytona so much but you don’t want to wait from now until eternity to get it then from what I can see you have two options;

1. Go grey, you must have a lot of dosh in the pockets though.

2. Get a Zenith Chronomaster Sport - it looks like a Daytona, it comes from a great brand, is more readily available, cost is less than the Daytona and to be honest unless you know, no one will notice it’s not a Daytona.

Other than that I don’t hold out much hope for you.

Good luck with your endeavor

Yes, you do miss every shot you don't take but there's also something called "reality"

If and when you give a random stranger $20k to buy a luxury watch, then maybe the stars might align for you and someone on TRF fulfills your dream

It’s over rated and over hyped and the subdials basically non functional. Get a chrono with real heritage and not made up celebrity hype. Go for a Speedmaster.

If I told you the Daytona would have a market price of $100K in 12 months, I'm guessing you would happily pay $35k today. There's no principled objection to paying over retail because it's not an issue of morality. People just don't want to lose money.

So what's the question? You want someone to sell you their Daytona at cost? No harm in asking I suppose lol.

Funny how some people think on here regarding the “giving you $20K.” Example: a friend of a friend is looking to sell a 911 T for $100K. Similar cars go for $115-120K. We met once when he told me that. I asked him for pictures and sent it to my colleagues and friends. One person almost ended up buying it just 2 days later but realized that it didn’t have rear seats due to CF bucket seats being fitted. He needs them for his kid. One could say “well why didn’t you just tell him it was $110K and pocket the $10K difference?” I’m not opportunistic in that way.

Looked at and it’s a tad too big/thick for me. It is high on my list though. Also considering a JLC Deep Sea Chronograph. To your first point, I do agree. I honestly never thought I would spend over $5K on a watch. But I do very much like the Daytona and the price point is at the cusp of me being almost uncomfortable buying it, let alone paying the grey price. That’s just crazy IMO.

This. People don't want the watch, they want the 35k watch for 13k. Or the 100k watch for 35k.

Nope. If you told me next year the watch will be worth $10K which is about a $5K loss after tax, I would still buy it. I don’t pay over MSRP if I can help it. Never have and don’t plan on changing that.

I have what you called grail watch and I paid retail in 2016.

This January I wanted to buy the previous version, price was in grey EUR 20500, I bought it and pay grey… now is worth from 2016 also APH dial nearly EUR 29000. Ref 116520.

This is everyone's ideal slogan, no one wants to pay over retail. You're after the most difficult watch to obtain at retail price in the world, something has to give. You either need to play the game and spend some money with a purchase history or go grey. There's other ways to obtain the watch from the AD at retail by thinking outside of the box but asking others for it on the forum isn't the way to go.

What exactly is wrong with OP’s ask? At least 50 people here typed 126500 in a thread just 2 weeks ago from a member offering to sell whatever he was offered for exactly what he paid. Obviously hoping for the chance to pay MSRP on the above reference in question.

All everyone who clicked on thread should do is either ignore the question and move on or offer help if so inclined.

Sorry OP I can’t help as I clicked that preverbal lap timer on myself!
