Wimbledon lighting and visibility.

For Wimbledon DJ owners….

How does the dial do in terms of visibility in low lighting? I’m going back and forth on whether I want to get a two tone RG Wimbledon. Don’t like the fact that there’s no lume on the Roman numerals. But I love the aesthetics of the watch.

The only Rolex I didn’t bond with was the Wimbledon DJ2 TT. I found it difficult to read even in daytime. I also feel that the colors, markers and date are disjointed. Not the more simple design I prefer. I traded it in for a DJ2 with a blue dial and fluted bezel.

Here’s my 41; you have to set your expectations properly with in demand DJ’s. Most people have their ideal configuration, then their OP presents a DJ with some different options. You have to decide pretty much on the spot. And the last thing I’d worry about is lume.

We’ll do ya, punk??

I hear you. I would only get a 2 tone wimbledon RG personally if offered. If not I don't need another DJ as I already have an SS that I love. I LOVE the aesthetics of the Wimbledon dial and the RG, however I also want it to be practical and I work regularly in low lighting conditions. So I want to make sure I can at least read the dial or it won't be worth me purchasing the watch if I can get it.

A friend of mine has a Wimbledon dial and I find it very hard to read the dial in daylight.

I have the TT RG. The watch is so outrageously beautiful that the absence of lume is irrelevant to me.

That’s the exact configuration I like. So you don’t get too annoyed with the readability of the dial?

I honestly don't have a problem with readability. I wear it mostly during the day so lume is not an issue. When I wear it out for an evening, I'm never in total darkness, so that's not an issue either. The sparkle of the bezel is mesmerizing and the color combo is killer. I consider it my most beautiful piece.

How can someone not see/read dark green/black romans on light gray?

As for lack of lume I’m not an operator doing tactical operating at dusk so I get by fine w the Wimbledon, YMMV… (I guess I need an explorer w lumed numerals for high speed low drag operating )

Had the wimbledon 41. Had it for about 3 days. It was stunning from a far and really a cool watch. I couldn't see the dial well in lots of light, and it bugged me. Had the chance to get the Pepsi, so, I did so.

The difficulty of reading the time on this model in low light is well documented. People can say it doesn't matter to them, and that's fine. But if legibility and lume are a concern I would suggest just going with the baton version of this watch. Dial is exact same color but you won't have those issues reading the time. And the lume on stick Datejusts really works well.

No rhodium stick dial available on the 41mm RG two tone Datejust though…

Yeah I’ve thought about that but the green Roman numerals with the grey had a whole other layer to the looks of the watch. I may just ask for it and see what happens. Let Rolex and the AD decide for me.

Well let's face it, Rolex of today is more jewelry than watch and many people rank legibility way down the list of what matters in choosing a watch. The Wimbledon is a beautiful watch and unique in the DJ lineup so I can't fault anyone for wanting it. For me legibility is more important - I really do use my watch to tell the time and rarely ever glance at my phone. So for me the lumed baton models seem easiest to read. No right or wrong answers here. If the Wimbledon sings to you get it! That's the most important thing

I recently picked up a 36mm steel Wimbledon with fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet. I wanted the jubilee, but this came in first. I've ordered a jubilee bracelet for it. I absolutely love it, but in indoor or poor lighting the dial is really dark and hard to read. I wish it had more lume, but I'm glad it has some. This dial absolutely pops in outdoor or great lighting. I do wish the dial were a bit lighter, but overall it's a great watch. I had the same concerns as you but overall I've been really happy with it. Best of luck on your decision.

This is really accurate. I wear my Explorer II for telling the time and my DJ is more the fancy watch when going out to a nice dinner with the wife.

Just my .02, I recently traded my 36mm two tone DJ for a 41 stainless Wimbledon Datejust. Due to health issues my vision has deteriorated dramatically over the past two years and I could not see much less read the dial on the 36(even though it had a stick full lume dial). I do not have any issues reading the dial on the 41. Thanks to DavidSW for the silky smooth deal btw. Be safe everyone.

I wanted the Wimbledon so bad, but quickly moved on because I had a hard time reading the dial in doors.
