AD versus Gray Market. Buy what you love.
Hey guys,
I bought my first PM last year the WG 41 Submariner the "Blueberry". I always thought my first PM would have been a Rose Gold piece but alas this was the hand I was dealt by my AD. I took the watch as it was new and thought buying it would help me build great purchase history and maybe acquire more desirable pieces or even a Rose Gold PM. Unfortunately almost a year has gone by and that AD hasn't even offered me a black sub even though I speak with them every one - two weeks. I grew to like the Sub but I think to this day haven't fallen in love with it. I gave up even asking my AD for SS Sport models thinking it was a waste of time. Instead constantly requesting a Rose Gold DD40, a RG Daytona, and a Full RG Sky. Almost a year and Nothing. The annoying part is that a year ago I could have bought a RG DD40 olive in the Gray Market for around the same price what I paid for the WG Sub. Today I can't even trade out of my sub for that watch on the gray market without adding sizeable cash on top. So the moral of the story I learned so far is don't buy a piece unless you love it, and if there is a piece you love which is currently trading close to retail on the gray market and you're waiting for your AD to "bless you" my lesson learned is to implore you to buy it from a Gray dealer. Because A they will actually value you as a client and not play games with you. B you'll actually get what you want. C if what you're after is super desirable anyway like a SS Daytona buy it for $35k that watch will always keep going up because too many people want it and Rolex will never make enough, ever. I have passed on that watch at $15k, $22k, $30k, and now I don't even want it because I have been chasing it for 6 years and I look back and wish I would have just taken it at $15k when it first came out 6 years ago. The Daytona will go higher and higher every year and your AD will not even offer you that watch at retail unless you have spent close to $1M - $2M at their store at minimum (from what I have heard). Also I have worked with multiple ADs over the past couple of years and noticed one thing that very rarely did I ever get the watches which were on my list and if I did they would be the least desirable ones on my list. I am curious to hear if others here have had the same experience or not and what are your thoughts and is it really worth playing the "AD Game?" Sent from my SM-F926U1 using Tapatalk |
