Thoughts on this trade

I was offered a GMT master II 116710LN for my Air King 116900 and Speedmaster 2021 hesalite. Straight up/no cash.

My watches have box and papers. The GMT is watch only.

Speedy doesn’t get much wrist time. Air king is my daily.

Curious on people’s thoughts.

Thanks

The GMT definitely can serve as a daily wearer. The market value for that watch right now is in the $12-13K range. From a $ standpoint, it seems equitable to me if both watches are around $5-6K.

I personally think any watch that isn't getting wrist time is grounds to be traded / sold.... barring one of sentimental value.

My 2 cents

Edit: full disclosure - I'm not as familiar with market values for your current watches. I think your air king may be more in the $7-8K range and speedmaster $5Kish. You can check on www.watchrecon.com

Don’t care for AK and little for Speedy but I wouldn’t do this deal. Not a fan of all black GMT bezel, although it’s discontinued (for now).

Comes down to if you want the GMT Master II more than the 2 pieces you're looking to trade.

You might be losing a little equity on the trade. If it was with box and papers and it wasn't an early run that is nearing service it might've been closer to the mark with all things relatively equal.

IMO that GMT is a 12k watch. Once it’s in your hands if you tried to sell it I think you would be hearing numbers like 8k. I’m saying that because it’s worn condition, no box, no papers. If I knew the seller and I knew it was his/her one owner watch, maybe. If you really want a GMT like that maybe work with a good/ large reseller. The advantage to that is let’s say you get the watch and there’s some thing that’s not quite right about it. A good reseller would be more likely to buy it back from you at a minimal loss as long as you were buying something else.

Anyway, nobody here can tell you what you want or like but that’s my financial opinion.

A colleague at work bought a watch only black ceramic GMT on ebay for around $11K I believe. $8K is definitely low.

That being said, I don't think it's a bad idea to check w/ a grey market watch dealer to see if you could score a similar trade for the same watch w/ full set. There are plenty of well known dealers to hit up.... but only if box and papers (and/or resale value) are of importance to OP.

I think the numbers in your post, higher up, are pretty accurate. I’m no dealer though. I’m just saying that once he has the watch, the wholesale value may be lower than expected. He may get seriously lowballed with no box, no receipts, etc. Dealers may throw out offers like 8k because they aren’t too excited about buying it. He may possibly get 9-10 but may have to work at it.

My point is only to look at other GMTs, not just this one.

Do think the black GMT is one of the better values at the moment given that it’s discontinued and all of the other color variations are going for much more $$$.

I also like the black two tone one. I used to own one and it actually looks fantastic on the wrist, in person.

Depends on the condition of the GMT, if it needs a service, etc.

You'll always do better selling your watches yourself at retail rather than trading them at closer to wholesale, but you knew that, right?

I would do it. That AK doesn't do it for me and the Speedy is easy to replace. I'd say keep the box for the AK and at least have that for the GMT. Eventually get it an RSC service and have a warranty card. It's a 100% do it from me.

I would do that trade, provided all watches are certified as authentic, the LN is still one of the best ceramic GMTs ever made. It’s the sober adult in the room among the colorful toys with the shiny jubilee bracelets.

Agreed. It depends on how badly you want the GMT and how you feel about the AK and Speedy. IMO.
