Rolex AD says stopped taking orders in July 2021

Was at my AD yesterday picking up another piece. While there asked about my DD40 YG on order since June 5, 2021. The manager said the last DD40 received took 9 months from order to delivery. Moreover, said since July, they were no longer able to take orders. Not sure if she meant DDs only or all Rolexes. Seems this is the way Rolex may be limiting access of grey marketers to new Rolexes.

Same deal at my AD. All special orders stopped around that time for ANY Rolex model.

I ordered a Day Date in July and picked it up last week. My AD didn’t mention anything about not being able to place orders, other than implying Rolex was how should I say reserving in demand Stainless models for gold owners. I just laughed

If you're a preferred customer they will get you what you want, granted it may take a few months but it will happen. It's all about the money and if they like you. If you spend plenty and they like you, the watches will appear.

I am looking for a lady datejust for my wife and the AD told me the same thing about requesting a specific piece...they seemed to think it will be resumed sometime in Q1 this year. They said they have been getting random ones in, but the combo my wife wants hasn't come in since August when I asked.

Go grey, the premium shouldn't be too crazy.

I have an agreement with my AD to get me that and a BLRO as soon as he can order for our 10 year wedding anniversary next December.

That could have been a watch the AD had incoming and not "requested". With some of the classic watches there are so many different combinations of the same reference that what you want never comes in. Also could be a different at Rolex USA vs in other countries.

ugh. Hard to believe there is THAT much interest in a 40k watch in common dial configuration. No steel, no sports.
Starting to despair I will ever get mine. Told 4-8 months on 11/1. Since then grey price has shot up 4k.
Well ,see what happens. Could tolerate the 47k they are at now but can't see paying over 50k for a watch that was going for 30k a couple of years ago.
Might just get a homage for $500 or less, some of which are very nice, hold on to my other two Rolex and give the AD the middle finger.
Somebody hand me my chewable Tums!

In that case definitely don't go house shopping anytime soon!

So how do you think these so called grey marketers get there watches,do you think these so called VIP or AD relationship customers buy then sell to the grey.Or do you think that ADs sell out of the back door thus putting there business and livelihood at risk.Or is it today that Rolex watches have become little more than ££$$€€ things to be sold to the highest bidder.

The ADs no longer get what they ask for in terms of DDs etc. They arrive and then they allocate them - hence the correct statement that they can no longer "order" one. Large ADs should get one of most models within a couple of years, if not more frequently.

Doubt it. I paid a 15% deposit and they put an order in for me.

FWIW, here's an email to me on 1/5/22.
"a Datejust 41mm steel and yellow gold with an oyster bracelet. smooth bezel and white dial. The great news is that this is one of the few models we can special order!
That being said, we do not know how long it will take to come in, any model that we are able to order is guaranteed within 12 months, but that is the only timeframe we can go by. To move forward with processing the special order we will need to set up an appointment for you to come into the store." So I went in person. The salesperson did not expect it to take a full year, but he had to say it could take that long, per Rolex. He expected 4-6 months. He didn't ask for a signature or a deposit. The explanation was that without a certain delivery time, they didn't want to tie up customers' money. MSRP, no more no less. They don't take online or phone orders. They say it cuts down on the insincere. This is a 120 year-old 4th generation jeweler, a brick and mortar. I ordered. All I have is a receipt. Now I wait.

It's unlikely those required orders. What you're likely seeing is just allocation.

By order, this used to be possible until July last year, for specific Day Date combos etc, but certainly nothing very hot eg. meteorite dials, sports models.

How many times will you copypaste the exact same response?

I think everybody on this forum know your opinion by now.
Maybe time to accept that this is the new reality and do the best of it instead of making it sound it is the worst thing imaginable?

From a different perspective, if the AD has no stock to sell you during your visit but they collect your name and contact information and note what you are interested, then they do in a sense take orders, and fill those requests when they receive a piece and call the prospective buyer. If the buyer has moved on and is not interested, then they offer the watch to anyone who they have contact information and can get on the phone. If you went in asking for a Sub and they have no buyer on the list for Deep Sea they will call the person waiting for the Sub and ask if they are interested. If you pass they may never get that Sub for you, if you buy what they offer, then you will probably be called again and again as long as you are buying. Maybe you have experienced a call offering a piece you didn't ask for.
