YM42 vs PP, AP or VC?

I own the YM42 and love it. However, I’ve been curious about other watches such as the aquanaut, AP diver or VC Overseas. For those of you who have experienced one or more of these watches, what would you choose and why?

I have the YM42 and would still pick it out of the list. I don't have an emotional connection with the other brands like I do with Rolex. Of the other 3, I guess I would go with the VC.

The YM42 has the better clasp (mini Glidelock) and the Oysterflex is superior to the others.

I’d take the aquanaut given I have a sub and Blro. The VC is probably the best “only” watch if you consider the strap options built in. The AP divers aren’t my thing. The YM is fine but not high on my list of rotating bezel rolexes.

Love my aquanaut (note that it's the older 5065 not this model).

Of the YMs I prefer the rose gold version, which I owned for a while before trading for something else.

Out of those options, if this were me, and assuming purchasing at retail, I'd take the VC. With the quick change straps, it's like having three watches in one...and it's a helluva nice watch imho.

I own a 5164 and several months ago I added a YM42. I consider them to be two very different watches for different occasions. While I wear the 5164 almost exclusively when I travel, I feel the YM42 is more versatile as a summer watch, a vacation watch, and a casual office watch. I like the comfort of the rubber strap/bracelet on both. And both are a bit under the radar in a similar way.

I kind of think of the YM42 as a better, more sophisticated version of a Submariner and I love the easy-to-use glidelock clasp.

If you're considering a 5167 or a YM42, the YM42 definitely has more heft and feels more substantial on the wrist. The 5167 will be much lighter and somewhat less showy than the YM42.

I do like the VC Overseas for its versatility, but I'm not compelled to own one. The RO is nice, but not a watch that fits my personal taste.

I can relate to much of what you mentioned with the YM42. It is probably my most worn watch. However, I have a Rolex heavy collection and am trying to determine whether the grass is greener on the other side. Would lean towards the Aquanaut if I could get one through an AD. Thanks for your post.

AP diver is massive and uncomfortable. The width of the strap at the buckle was too uncomfortable for me. I had one and got rid of it after 6 months.

VC. You get 3 looks in 1, with the interchangeable straps out the box.

YM best watch on paper across the board. Aqua is fun as a daily though, can't deny it has something to do with the brand name. It's also much lighter and very comfortable with the right wrist size.

YM42 vs PP, AP or VC?

VC Overseas hands down.

All choices are great by the way, but the Overseas is clearly the best for me. That Geneva Seal movement is such a joy to look at. Strap changing is laughable easy, the quality of the case is fantastic.

YMII over the VC by a nose. The YM being PM makes it preferable IMO, and the glide lock. The PP is desirable because it’s a PP, the watch itself does nothing for me. Neither does the AP.

The Rolex is miles behind the other 3!
They are hand finished haute horologie watches.
Rolex is mass produced "high street" with a fair comparison being against Omega

YM or VC

I dislike the PP and AP

VC probably a better watch, but the YM seems to have more "appeal"

PP- form follows function The Aqua takes time of ownership to really "get the watch".

The YM42 and the Aquanaut would both be miles ahead of the AP diver and the VC... The YM42 is seriously underrated considering the material it is made of and the comfort of the OF. The Aquanaut is really stealthy and only people with interest in horology would be able to understand the significance of it. The lightweight nature of the Aquanaut also makes it a comfortable daily. I'm a real sucker for 'cut/size to fit' straps like the OF and the Aquanaut as well. The deciding factor would be ease of obtaining from AD - the YM42 is way way easier to get on the list and obtain... which means one can enjoy it on the wrist rather than spending their time waiting on the list...

The YM42 is far sturdier than the other brands. As much as PP and AP like to advertise their watches as “sport” they cannot take the abuse that a Rolex can. Also, as soon as you scratched the bezel on either those you would be distraught-or at least I was.

Having had experience with all but the VC, I’d stick with the YM. I’ve had it, a 5712, and a couple offshores, and I’d go back to the YM.

YM or VC, personally I never liked the Aquanaut, overpriced and overhyped.

I've owned all those in the past.

All make excellent daily wearers but maybe the AP is a bit bulky for some occasions.

I love the 5167 especially the dial but it can feel a little thin and insubstantial when worn casually and the bezel is delicate.

The clasp and keepers on the rubber strap for the VC are fiddly and I found the bracelet a bit bulky for my personal taste. Still a lovely piece!

Lastly I have the ym42 right now and not yearning for the others which is rare for me!

This^^ I have the same watches the YM42 and the 5164. The YM is my daily. The Rolex is far more robust especially the clasp. The PP is much lighter and dare I say delicate.

Disregarding price and availability I'd go 5167 among those four w/o any doubt.

The YM42 would be my runner up but it feels a little blingy to me with all its polished surfaces and it is large for my 6.5-6.75 wrists. Not a big fan of the AP ROO including the Diver. If any, I'd get the black ceramic 15707 but it is again a large (and fat) watch. Unlike many others on here, I don't find the VC Overseas three-hander attractive. Too many design elements I don't appreciate ruin the package for me. I had zero desire to pull the trigger when I had 4500 blue on my wrist a few years ago while waiting for 5711 blue.

All are tremendous watches. Just based on the aesthetics (setting aside brands/hype/etc), my preference ranking for your lineup is:

1. PP Aquanaut
2. VC Overseas
3. Rolex YM
4. AP ROO

Can you give me a little more perspective on what you mean by “get” the warch? Is it the look? Comfort? Movement? Trying to understand aside from it being PP and I suppose hand made, I don’t see anything special outside of telling time and I guess the dial looks sorta cool. Not a huge fan of the non circular watches either but like I said interested to know why this is so highly so ought after
