What would you trade a SS Ceramic Daytona for?

I'm getting bored with my SS ceramic panda Daytona. The reasons I'm kinda bored with it: I don't like the bracelet, the dial is a little plain, and it's appreciated so much I feel like I can trade up significantly without spending too much more. It's a weird mix of toughness / overengineering ... but delicateness because scratched PCLs are so hideous. Feels 'stuck in the middle'. At $13k it's the best value there is...at $35k I'm not so sure.

What I do love is that it's a go anywhere / do anything kinda watch. I don't like to wear it regularly because scratches on the PCLs bother me...less so on the case than the bracelet.

The challenge is - even with secondary market prices on this model - I'm not sure what I'd trade it for. What would you trade for - give or take $10k on the price?

Watches that come to mind for me are Lange 1 (basic in WG, little in PT or moon phase), AP Royal Oak Offshore "Ghost", Patek 5065g, Patek 5170G)...Another option would be to trade down to a vintage steel rolex (e.g., white 1680) and treat it more as a true daily.

Other two watches in the collection are a day date 1803 with a silver sunburst dial and a Patek 3940R, both of which have captivating dials. I really appreciate when a dial looks a bit different depending on the light conditions.

What comes to mind for you?

Is selling a Daytona a horrible idea? Anyone do so and regret it?

If I bought it, I'd keep it. If you don't like it, flip it. If you're asking for so many variables, seems you're not even sure what you like, so any of those will likely end up like the Daytona later on. In which case just wait and be patient. When the right watch comes to your mind you won't be able to think of anything else, get that one.

Even w/o polished bracelets, a lot of the watches you listed will be way more delicate than the Daytona. What about a Zenith Chronomaster Original on a strap and something else? GP Laureato also very nice (though it has some polished links, too).

I'm sure you could have both and then some for the price of a Daytona.

I'd trade a Daytona plush a little cash for a Day Date or gold GMT in a heartbeat!

I like this post but lots to unpack.
1. You may never get another - Would you be ok with this?
2. How would you feel if it continued to rise?
3. Whilst I love the red 1680. Will it be substantial enough given the feel of modern watches?

What you said about it not being a 35k watch is bang on. It's a weird situation as knowing watches have increased in value is nice to know you won't lose your shirt. But the other side of the coin is you may lose a limb given the values are known. I definitely have to consider what to wear and when. Perhaps subconsciously this is forming part of your decision? If it's purely bracelet based then get a rubber B and crack on!

Have you considered putting your watch on an oysterflex?

I would just sell for the highest $$ you can get. Then see how all the other options feel and if its the right one to replace the Daytona. Paying MSRP for Daytona and getting the aftermarket $$ is a no brainer for me.

I would not sell it. It’s the best SS watch in the Rolex catalog IMHO. Very versatile. PCLs can always be cleaned up eventually during service. Try not to stress them.

As others mention, you could get an oysterflex or super jubilee bracelet. This watch is great with various bracelet options.

At a $13k AD purchase, I tend to think about this piece different than most. You could beat the crap out of it, wearing it rough all over the world. You’d still not lose money on it.

I enjoy mine bought in 2016 for 12400. Wish it were a 42mm like the speedy but I enjoy the watch. I don't travel with it as I don't want it to get stolen. I have it insured for 42k but if something were to happen I would not take the 42 and repurchase as it wouldn't make since. I do plan on keeping it. Still my fav Rolex by far.

Agree with what others have said.

Are you “done” with the Daytona altogether, or just tired of your watch’s current configuration?

If the former, see what else catches your eye…do you want a dress watch? Sub? Etc. The WG meteorite Pepsi GMT is a huge favorite here on TRF, and looks awesome. If you want to go sporty, that’s the one I’d get.

If you now want to go dressy, what about a DD? Again, there are so many wonderful configurations. I’d personally go with a platinum DD with the glacier blue dial and deconstructed Romans.

If you want to leave the Rolex lineup altogether, but have nothing specific in mind, I’d play around on Chrono 24 and see what catches your eye.

I agree with all of your points. If the Daytona is still a piece you want to keep, then it makes most sense going to a gold oysterflex model. You can likely get in at an almost even swap. I personally find the SS Daytona a bit boring. But in gold (either yellow, white or rose), it is a completely different piece and is a great balance between sporty, elegant and go (almost) anywhere kind of watch.

i've never been enamored with the SS daytona, so if i were in your shoes, i'd most likely seize the market opportunity and trade it away too. i think an AP RO or ROO would be a great call (the tapisserie dials are sweet). one of the PPs you mention would also be great. something else to consider is a 116619lb (the blue dial is unique and lovely). i wouldn't trade down. i'd definitely trade up. go for it.

I like the 5170g you referenced but afraid it will take more than 10k on top. Still that’s a trade I’d be happy about.

I’d get a ROO.

I’ve thought of trading mine but I got from my AD to mark birth of my son and feels like it would be wrong to both of them haha.

Why not just get a rubber b, Horus, Everest strap?

I was in the same boat as the OP and traded/sold my white Daytona-C recently, and added some cash, to get a new WG Sub. Couldn't be happier.

If you no longer love any watch, I'd move it for something you do love. This is a hobbyist/collector mentality, of course, not a dealer mentality.

Full disclosure: I have three other Daytonas (6263 cream dial, 16520 black dial and a 116500LN black dial) that I prefer a lot more than the white Daytona-C, so it would have been a tougher decision if I didn't have the others.

I think selling it is a terrible idea. Put it away, in the safe for a little bit. Wear some other watches. Maybe take that 10K you're willing to add and buy a new watch. Maybe when you come back to the daytona, you'll fall back in love.

Only thing I’d trade a 116500LN for would be a much higher priced “at retail” grail. In my case, which is unconventional, would be a Patek perpetual 5320G. Not the most loved nor sought after piece, but one that I’d love to own. A quiet piece where I could take full advantage of the market price of my Daytona.

I traded my first 116500 and horribly regretted it. I righted the wrong last year, thankfully. I’d just make sure. As other have mentioned you can play around with alternative straps. 116500 on oysterflex looks incredible.

Let’s face it, sounds like you will eventually get bored with whatever watch you own after a while.

Everyone has their opinion OP, and I respect yours in not appreciating the Daytona Ceramic white dial, although it’s my favorite watch and Rolex variant (I have 4).

That being said, if you’re off the whole Daytona line, what about an AP chrono? It’s a larger watch and extremely beautiful. You’d be looking at maybe 15k or so extra in a trade with the Daytona ceramic white dial
