I had a 5513 now I have a BlackBay 58

Earlier this week I sold my lovely old Rolex Sub 5513, and yesterday I picked up a new black bay 58.


Something I thought I’d never do.

Here’s my review of the 58

- it’s nice.

Your happiness is what matters most. Out of curiosity, did you prefer the BB58 all along + needed the cash?

I’d much prefer to have the 5513 (esp if Maxi dail).

BB58 is nice, but imho 5513 is nicer.

If your happy that’s all just matters but personally, for the price of a BB58 did you really need to sell the 5513?

Couldn’t you have tried to find a way to have both?

I could see adding a BB58 to a collection with a 5513 but no way would I personally sell a 5513 for a BB58... but, whatever works for you! Congratulations on the new watch.

Refreshing post.
I have many “nice” watches (116500, 16520, 16610lv, SD4k etc…) and the BB58 is my most worn watch. Very accurate, comfortable and a perfect daily.

The 5513 was nice too.
But honestly it was starting to feel increasingly silly.
No longer a tool watch or practical as a watch to dive with .
50 years old and beautiful. But as an old watch is was arguably inferior to most modern watches.
As it’s cash value increased its value to me decreased. The AD waiting list and grey dealers situation has for me diminished the brand and I suppose my relationship with it.

I actually went to buy a seiko captain willard and a Tudor pelagos fxd.
Couldn’t find a seiko or fxd to try on but the 58 seems like a solid enough watch for now .

Oh I went for the black and gilt 58.
The pretend rivets are at least period correct.
On the blue watch it was a step too far

I’m no expert but I believe the blue was introduced in the 70s by Tudor by which time rivets had long gone . Maybe the blue shouldn’t even be called a 58?

BB58 is awesome. My wife is wearing mine right now but come summertime, I’ll be stealing it back to put on the rubber strap. It’s a really great watch for the price.

I’ve owned multiple vintage subs, the current 41mm date sub and a few tudors, but the BB58 is very different. I would say it’s most similar to a 14060, but the bracelet is probably a bit inferior. It works really well for what it is, and i find it comfortable, but maybe not as good as a 93150.

I think it’s the perfect watch for someone waiting for a submariner, or in addition to. But i bought a new sub a few months ago and haven’t really touched my BB58 since. For $4,000 though, there is a lot of value there.

The one thing that keeps me away from it on a daily basis is a lack of a date ( not a huge turnoff) and how light it is on bracelet. You can really get used to the weight and it makes wearing other watches a bit heavy.

The BB58 is 11.9mm thick and the 126610 is 12.3, but they wear very differently on me. Mostly due to the end links on the sub and the taper.

Maybe not. The 5513 is a classic to be sure but from a functional standpoint it's also an old watch with dead lume and who knows how long they can keep the original movement running. I'm not one of the "patina" fans. It's just old paint that is yellowing. Same with "tropical" dials. Just old and breaking down. I doubt the peeling clear coat and faded paint on a car adds much to it's value.

OK, bring on the pitchforks and torches.

And yes, I do get the vintage thing as getting to wear a functional antique.
