124273 Rolex Explorer 1 Two-Tone vs 124270 SS
Hello everyone,
I lost my relationship with my long-standing AD (see my previous thread) and I plan on buying an Explorer I in the Grey Market (first time using Grey Market). My first thought was to get the 124270 but then I saw that the 124273 in two-tone wasn't much more money. I haven't seen either of the watches in-person yet. I would love to hear your thoughts on two-tone vs the SS. Thank you in advance. |

IMO I think the Explorer should stay like the Sub (no date) - SS only, and as true to the original as possible. The TT version does absolutely nothing for me.

I like the TT version, and it does have history, contrary to popular belief.

I just got the two tone, and I have all steel 39mm. Two tone is more fun and my choice of the two

I didn't realize that the Explorer I had a history of being two-tone. Thank you for sharing this with me.

It really depends on what you want the watch for. An every day watch, I would say the SS is better. But if you live in a well off neighborhood or that safety is not an issue, and/or you don't think gold will attract unwanted attention, then the TT for sure. When you put them side by side, it's clear the TT is a class above IMHO.

The TT is good if you already have an existing SS collection.
The SS can start and finish a collection. |

Get a 36 mm TT DJ with smooth bezel and oyster to pair with the 124270.
As for the Explorer and TT, AFAIK, only the Explorer Date was TT, not the Explorer. |

I chose the SS but I do love the TT too
In the UK at least the TT grey prices are still about £2k above the SS. In fact the SS is a bit of a bargain in the UK at grey prices right now as the price hasn't risen to reflect the new RRP. You can pick them up for about £2-2.5k over retail which isn't bad for a classic Rolex steel sports model.
