Oris has caught my attention

I'm new to the world of swiss watches up until now its be seikos and citizens but I feel its now time to take the leap. Do you guys think Oris would be the best way to get my feet wet or should I jump strait into something a little more mainstream. Something like a Omega maybe.

I've owned a Oris classic date time piece for a while now. Its one of those dress watches I wear mostly under suits. Great piece and keeps accurate time. Oris is certainly one of the cheaper swiss brands, but top quality.

It totally depends on your budget. If you want to start from ground up, then start as follow:

1. Hamilton (Automatics, swiss movements, super affordable)
2. Oris (Automatics, swiss movement, reasonable priced)
3. Tag (Automatics, swiss movement, higher than oris prices)
4. Omegas (their seamasters/planet oceans are HOT) (automatics, swiss movements, pricier)
5. Rolex (the king of mid range luxury watches)

One other brand that I'm totally in love with is Panerai. Very very unique and bold looking watches. Tread carefully cause this watch madness can engulf you and leave you bewildered and broke.

Enjoy!

Thanks heresiarh I would say that I can afford between the

2. Oris (Automatics, swiss movement, reasonable priced)
3. Tag (Automatics, swiss movement, higher than oris prices)
4. Omegas (their seamasters/planet oceans are HOT) (automatics, swiss movements, pricier)

Although I've never been a fan of Tags cause to me they just look a little plastic like. So that would leave Omega as my other option.

I'm looking more for a divers watch since I never know what kind of conditions I'll be working in day to day I want a durable water proof watch that can take a beating. I've heard Omegas can handle this type of treatment but they just doesn't seem to be much out there about the durability of the Oris brand.

This watch will be no watch box queen and I need a watch that can handle that.

i'd jump right in and buy a watch built to last a lifetime. bypass oris and go strait for one of the omega divers. the seamaster and planet ocean are both lovely watches.

All I'm saying is don't shoot the Tags yet. Check out the Aquaracer 500m. Its a beautiful watch, heavy, robust, and bold looking. Check it out at your local dealer and I'm sure you can get one at a reasonable discount.

If not satisfied, I swear by any Planet Ocean any day. Beautiful looking timepieces and the one with the Orange bezel is outstanding.

Hey, if you can spend around 3-4K perhaps you can land yourself a submariner no date?? all time classic.

As for Oris durability, I can't say anything about that but I don't own any of their diver pieces. But I'm pretty sure they are top quality. I do like the GMT model.

Let us know which one you decide upon.

I'm thinking about the Oris Divers Date Blue on the steel bracelet. For some reason it just smiles at me. I think I might spend too much time worrying about various dents, dings and scratches if I get the omega.

for a little extra you can get a titanium Oris Diver, it's worth the extra $100 or so, the SS is nice but its a little heavy cause its so chunky, the TT1 is sharp and light

all these sports/divers watches are meant to be worn, and worn well. don't worry about the dings and dents, they can be polished and buffed out easily.

I learned a valuable lesson years ago with guitars. I'd dream of the best ones and play them in the shops with their great sounds - but I'd always end up buying the cheaper ones because they were more in keeping with my ability.

I kept telling myself, "When I get better at playing, I'll buy something better." Well, I never got better playing those lower-quality guitars. Somehow, they'd always end up in the corner gathering dust. I always ended up being a little disappointed with them.

Then one day I bought a Martin guitar, one of the best and most historic makers in the history of acoustic guitars. It actually wasn't all that expensive but it was so well made and sounded so sweet. I found I could never put it down.

I'm rambling, but I guess what I'm trying to say here is that you should go for the watch that really catches your heart. Get your feet wet by buying what you REALLY have your heart set on - don't settle for less. After the initial joy wears off you'll start to feel that it really wasn't the one you wanted after all. It sounds like deep down you really want an Omega. If so, go for that.

Oris watches are great - I've got three (no divers) and wear them regularly. But if the Omega speaks to you, then you have to answer its call.
Trust me

I had one (an Oris), it ran +40/sec a day from the dealer... I bought it on vacation so returning it was not an option. I ended up selling it... Kinda soured me on the brand...

The thing is, there were many great, amazingly good Swiss watches built and many are still out there. Lemania chronographs. Enicar automatics. Hell, even the Invicta Sub tribute is one hell of a watch.

Wear the watch that floats your boat on any given day!

Luvmyrolex is spot on. If you pick up a pre-CBS Strat, you will be compelled to play it. Buy the watch that fits. Live up to it. Deserve it.

i have an Oris, Orelier Complication. They use an ETA movement....it keeps excellent time, but I've had it back to them twice in the last two(or so) years, because the winding stem keeps breaking off ......the first repair was under warranty, but this one...will be expensive. it's a nice watch, but i would go for a used rolex, maybe a Date Just in the same price range as an Oris. A used rolex in good repair, gently used, will give good service to your grandchildren, and if they treat it right, to your great grandchildren. Just IMHO, and PM sent.

I fully agree with this list, but would add Tissot to #1 with Hamilton.

go for the omega. it'll be the most satisifying, and no only is it a beater, strong, durable, even when u need to wear at dates, occasions, etc, it's an Omega, and it'll look good. Far more versitile in terms of being a durbale beather and a classy watch, that is not over bulk, after 12 monhts of buying the oris you'll want the omega, you be looking at the mirror every day wondering how to pronouce OOooo-MEHH-GA, OOOoooooMAY-Gaaa, untill you finally get it. hahaha get the omega.....

Breitling style's not to your taste? They have a pretty deep depth rating and are priced in between Tag and Omega. Unless it's Oris you really like, I suggest you stick to either Omega or Breitling at that price range. Or maybe even a pre-owned Sub.

Omega over Oris any day if you plan on keeping it for any length of time. I've had bad experiences with Oris servicing.

I like Oris, but I am aware of various people having problems with these watches.

For a little more, you can pick up an excellent Omega whose quality is more on par with Rolex.

Just my two cents!

No Oris.
Buy a Rolex! Dont have $4500 for a new one? Buy a pre-owned Sport model here for less than $3000. Otherwise you'll have a seiko, citizen, and oris, and will still want a Rolex

I have had my Oris BC3 for over 5 years now and it has been outstanding. No problems what so ever. It may not be the most accurate watch in the world but it was a great entry level automatic watch for me. I do not think you can go wrong with the value.

What I like about Oris is their deep model selection ranging from dress to sport. Hell, they even have a skeleton model - Artelier Skeleton that I had, which, I'm very very happy with.

I love the design of many of the models, but I was in contact with a salesperson from "Watches of Switzerland," who told me his stores no longer carry them because they are not reliable and break frequently. Too bad or else I would have purchased one.

With Oris' price range, I'm sure they attract customers who are still pretty new to mechanical movements who may or may not know how to handle them properly. Unlike with more expensive watches, users are either well versed or very careful with their watches. Just a theory, of course.
