Imperfection is Beauty

I know these dial imperfections are controversial, but I quite enjoy them. I love how I don’t notice the imperfections 98% of the time under normal use/conditions, but they’re present upon closer inspection.

My birth year 16710.

Wow I’ve never seen that effect on a dial, how does that usually happen?

Supposedly Rolex had not perfected their glossy dials and with time, under certain conditions (not sure what these conditions are), this would result.

Typically spider dials are from the lacquer Rolex started using when they transitioned from Matte to gloss dials.

Yes from aging and drying out. I would have it refinished. Its eventually going to start to curl and peel.

That is a neat surface finish. Obviously not intended by Rolex, but as long as it doesn’t progressively melt off, it’s very nice. Some collector would likely pay plenty of money for this melting, spider finish. Probably there is a standardized library of adjectives describing these type of finishes.

When shopping this, I was given two options - both were my birth year and in similar condition except the dial. I think this one was $200 more, so the premium wasn't exceptional. This was a couple years ago.

To be honest no vintage Rolex collector would pay more for a damaged dial... Patina and damaged parts are two different things.

As long as OP likes his watch this way I am ok with that.

I looks at these and think it will be a matter of time before the dial paints starts to peel away. That issue may take many years to happen but why keep it up to that point. Just service with a new dial.

If you like it thats cool.

I have wondered if this was an epoxy or paint issue etc. and whether or not it has been rectified. Another thought of mine was that if a dial looks like this a true outdoorsman wore the Rolex perhaps the way it was intended to be used. In that case this is very cool.

Good that you are happy with it.
In all objectivity you should have gotten a discount instead of paying more

Not really concerned about flaking or peeling.

When that happens, flakes or small pieces can drop through the date window and into the movement. Then it needs to be stripped down, cleaned and regulated (i.e. serviced). Looks like that's not about to happen soon, though.

I understand the dangers, I just don’t think it’s going to happen (anytime soon).
