Advice on store credit?

All,

I purchased a vintage day date on a leather strap from a well known gray market dealer online last year. Long story short, the watch had issues and the dealer did try TWICE to repair under warranty however the watch is apparently a lost cause.

I have been offered store credit at this popular gray market retailer the tune of $9,500. As you all know, that’s not really enough outright for any of the more “desirable” models, however, I can put cash with the store credit to make up the difference.

Rolex wise, I currently have a 116610 from 2017 and 11690 from 2021. I would like to add another Rolex to my collection but would appreciate any advice from fellow members.

What would you guys do?

Thanks!

Advice on store credit?

I would pick something I want with the knowledge that I am adding $9500 in store credit towards the purchase.

If I already had a Submariner, I would likely add a Milgauss.

Another popular option would be a Datejust.

I do have an option for 70% refund but would rather use the credit.

If you want to stay vintage (or almost vintage) go for a nice 16570. You credit is in the right ballpark, or might need to add a tad depending on condition, age, dial color etc.

Use your legal skills and make some threats and negotiate a refund or larger store credit. If I am reading this correctly, they sold you a bunk watch and wasted a ton of your time.

I don't know the specifics of your deal or the terms of it, but why are you not getting a full refund or full credit? I know disputes can be complicated and it's easy for someone not involved to say you should be doing better, but it just doesn't sound right.

If the $9,500 is the full credit, that's fine. I would ultimately do whatever maximizes your recovery and makes you whole.

Is the watch really beyond all hope for repair?? Even a vintage DD still has a pretty tanky movement in it, I should hope it could last decades!

Hmmmm. Maybe we don’t know all the details but I would expect a full refund for a watch that can’t be fixed while under warranty.

Maybe your are fine with a credit and it’s a moot point.

If the watch is a dud you should get your money refunded. Maybe you can obtain another watch from the seller, but do you really want to go back for more of that kind of service?

Did you not suspect that the watch might have issues?

You are a lawyer, get a 100% refund. That’s how warranties work. Either he replaces/fixes it or you get your money back.

Also, no watch is a “lost cause”. It’s too expensive for him to fix it so he is pulling the “lost cause” excuse hoping you will buy it. That’s BS. Tell him to send it to RSC, they can fix it and he has to pay for it.

Please ID this seller so we all can steer clear.

Online reputations are so important these days that I suspect with a bit of a pushback, something like "all the guys on the Rolexforums say that I should get a 100% refund" will get you much closer. Why buy a watch you don't want just because you have a credit for most of the cost?

Was it sent to RSC? What is the watch worth? What did you pay? Was it $9500?

ID the dealer. Thats BS. As others have said its too expensive for him to fix. You should get a full refund. Unless as part of your purchase you agreed at time of purchase that you would take a credit if something like this were to happen. In any case, the watch community should know..thanks for sharing

first, how much did you pay for the watch? if the 9.5k is more than what you paid, then use it toward the next watch and ask for a more reasonable price on the next watch.

if 9.5k is what you paid for, i would demand for a full refund. contact your cc company maybe

Watch is a "lost cause". They should refund your money entirely. I would with check the dealer State's Department of Consumer Affairs.
