Ordering a Nakaya from official website

Hi all,

I'm about to order a $10K pen from the Nakaya website. The US-based dealers do not carry this pen. Am I going to get a big import tax bill from the US customs? Are there any pitfalls to watch out for? Thank you.

On an issue like that ask a lawyer instead of us peons. But you should probably plan on getting taxed and hope you get surprised.

After years of ordering pens from overseas merchants, I just last month ran into the dreaded import fees.

I paid them gladly. It is all a part of the system. When you finally hold that work of art in your hands, those fees will feel nominal!

I am just so glad that the ### of my overseas transactions were not import taxed.

You'll also need to fill out the paperwork as an "Importer" from your delivery service/customs pretty sure. I seem to get pinched by this lately. Need an EIN or a SSN.

Send it to a package forwarder in Japan and then have them write your own customs value like "Used Pen".

Any sign of life on the Nakaya? It may be that they are creating the pen which can take up to a year or longer.

What model pen did you purchase?

nibs dot com is a great place for Nakaya! (I have nothing to do with them, but I go and drool over beautiful expensive pens all the time)

I picked up my Nakaya's from nibs. Great people to deal with in the future if you choose to order from them. I got stuck with waiting for two custom order music nibs (my request) right before the beginning of covid (not my request). These are Century music nibs with Nakaya script on them. They are tuned differently as far as feedback goes. That was really interesting to me. Both music nibs have different feedback. The wait was so long because it carried into covid. Asia was hit particularly hard at the time as we know. The wait for the nibs ended up being 8 months. I'm curious if Nakaya themselves quoted you a wait time that is similar in this day and age? Regardless, I hope you end up using the pen despite the high cost. I used to daily drive all kinds of crazy things. The only issue I ever had was dropping one of my Visconti Millionaires on a vinyl floor. Caught it with my foot and ended up with a soft, rolling, landing. Finally, 14 years of competitive soccer pays off!
