Unexpected Incoming, Outgoing & Incoming

Wow! And I wasn’t even planning on buying a watch.

Took my son and his friend to a nearby shopping centre today. While they were off doing their thing I decided to do a little window shopping. Popped into the Rolex AD there (also sells other brands) and as I walked in I joked “Hi, just thought I would see what Rolex you have available”. The lady laughed and said “We thought you might. Have a seat.”

Well, that was odd, but I thought I would run with it. She disappeared for a couple of minutes and came back beaming, with a brand new black dial SS Daytona. “Is this what you were hoping for?” she smiled.

Well, actually, no it wasn’t. I don’t like Daytonas. But, in this climate... I looked it over, declined to have it sized saying I would do it at home, paid and ran! I ran straight to one of the secondary market dealers in the centre, who seemed quite happy to help me out. Then I ran straight to an Omega AD and had a lovely time trying on a few pieces.

I ended up with a watch I’ve had an eye on for a while, a white faced SM300 on rubber (and a few more £000s in the bank than when I left home).

I think I’m a bit in shock, but I couldn’t turn that opportunity down. Strangely the same Rolex AD nearly sold me a Sub a few months ago when I went in to pick up a new bracelet for my Sub. I actually wanted the bracelet that time (and had already paid for it) so I pointed out their mistake. I couldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth twice!

Harsh but to the point, and assuming the story is true (I have my doubts) I have to agree with you!

This has to be a joke! No Rolex AD would offer a Black Steel Daytona to walk in customer.

Unless you have a receipt of the Daytona sale from the Rolex AD or the grey dealer.. I consider this is a fake story.

Exactly. Let's see some proof.

I was offered rainbow Daytona at retail and I denied, then they offered panda Daytona and I again denied, it’s their loss.

Perhaps an attempt to make up for the Sub fiasco. Which was totally taken advantage of. Intent in that case was, I’m sure, to offer sought after piece to someone who’d really like it ahead of others who’d waited longer or spent more. Intent wasn’t to give the OP a 20k windfall…

Only people to blame are people who buy 2nd hand. Only reason we can't walk into an AD and buy anything we want on the spot is because people are paying extra for 2nd hand examples.

How could you not take a quick cell pic? This is like walking in the woods and not taking a pic of Bigfoot because you are there for birdwatching.

Ha!

No, I wanted to get out quickly. And I'm no fan of the Daytona anyway.

I did expect a bit of a flame, but isn't this pretty much what (some) people were saying thus guy should have done?

Jason this one’s not as good as your ‘spring bar’ thread or is it?

First, there really isn't any proof this actually happened.

Second, plenty of ADs are on here and this is the exact reasoning why they don't sell to just anybody walking in. Because if true, they don't want this to happen. I doubt it did and if it did, it just hurts the process for everyone else.

Well, if this is true... He purchased it (with near certainty - even have a very high probability guess which branch) from the UK AD chain; that chain's "customer criteria" (again, if genuine) have been posted online; someone there almost certainly monitors online forums; someone will have almost certainly verified by lunch tomorrow (and will not look kindly on it, again, if true).

Not too worried about that as I don't buy watches from that group very often (only once, historically) and I'm not really interested in much of the current Rolex line up.

More concerned that we'll see a post say " Got the call for my new Daytona, but when I got there it was gone".

At least you can tell them what shop it's in instead.
