The new Air King is a laughably lazy update
My goodness.

I actually like the current one but the crown guards don’t suit the case for me - strange decision as had expected a new dial with the folding of the SSC bloodhound relationship which it was linked too. That’s Rolex though does what it wants

At least they fixed the dial with the 05 and the lumed 3/6/9. Must have used up all those WG numbers from the Explorer MKI. Waiting for current owners to start saying "future classic"

I am surprised this still hasn't been discontinued. Air King owners, what about this watch (pre-2022 or 2022 release) does it for you?

It looks thinner to my eye. Probably dropped the outdated Faraday cage. Also movement upgrade and flip-lock bracelet (better clasp imo).
I think the new version is way more attractive than the older model. Love the pop of color on the seconds hand and Crown/Logo, very playful and unique. Having said that, I still think prefer the 214270 in this overall aesthetic.

Who knows, maybe we'll find out it has a silicon hairspring making it anti-magnetic. I wish it had grown to 42mm to make it a true pilot's tool watch, but alas no.

I like it... all that needed updating from the first iteration of this style has been done. The Lume is an easy/lazy update... but equally a lazy omission from the first iteration. I'm gonna get one.

Well, they did change the entire case, new movement, added crown guards, changed bracelet and clasp, and reworked the dial. It seems like it’s an entirely different watch that just happened to keep the aesthetic that some people find unpalatable.
Anyone know the US cost? The Rolex site has been all kinds of weird on my phone. |

Was needed and definitely an improvement. Also the crown guards give it more oomph. Decent upgrade tbh. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I was hoping they would offer a more retro dial but I do agree they fixed the dial to what it should have been from the start.

The new mid case is thinner with less curvature on the lugs

If it’s thinner with the more cohesive dial (05, all lumed, are the 3,6,9 ever so slightly smaller?), then I think it is a nice update. |

How does the dial relate to the Bloodhound SSC project? Looking to be educated here - don't know much about the air king admittedly.

Seems like they're trying to create hype around the only NON-hype piece in the catalog.

OK. Now the watch can go back to obscurity since the speculators did not see a complete discontinuation.

How is it lazy? They fixed three of the biggest things people complain about...lack of lume, case thickness, and putting a zero before the five. Gave it an updated movement, added crown guards and gave it a better bracelet. Those are all solid upgrades. What were you expecting?

I don't think this was lazy at all. Just a normal update as expected. Only reason some feel like it's lazy is because ypu wanted a new design altogether. Every year people think it's going to be discontinued because they don't like it, and assumes everyone feels the same way. Clearly Rolex don't feel it that way, they are upgrading it and keeping it in the catalogue. And that is fair.
