I Can't Stop Looking at T/T DJ and PM President's - Rolex's Strategy All Along

Up until age 50 I was s/s sports watch guy all day long, until I fell in love with and purchased a rootbeer. I also have a Sub and Slate YM. Over the last 2 years I've really become taken with gold and DJs and am nowwaitlisted for a few rose gold options.

I'm wondering if the scarcity of s/s helped broaden my horizons? Either way I'm glad it did.

Talking of gold, that Vacheron 222......wow.

I'm on the list for a RG DD40 Chocolate Motif dial.

Seeing some of the sports models hit 30k+ and realizing you can likely get a full PM DD40 for around 40k retail without a crazy wait time, starts to put things in perspective.

You better be prepared to wait.

DD40s especially RG ones are super hard to get now. Some ppl I know going on 15+ months now. I've been waiting for close to 12 and nothing in sight anytime soon.

I was having a similar chat with a friend recently when I was debating between keeping a SS sports or RG OF Daytona due to a lifestyle change. I bet there are many SS watch people that feel the same about a PM DD. It’s an addictive climb up the Rolex ladder.

Artificial scarcity + changing old age tastes = TT Datejust.

I loved this TT DJ 16013 when I bought it in 1987, I was 35 years old. I'm now 70 and the watch is 35, and each time it comes back from the RSC looking like new after servicing, the love is renewed. When I mentioned that I need to decide who will inherit it someday (I have no kids), my 26-year-old niece who has seen it on my wrist all her life immediately threw her hat in the ring. That kid's got taste.

That's such a classic, so cool you still love it. Mind you I've owned my Sub for 35 years too.

For some reason I read “my 26-year-old wife”

To be fair YG is becoming more fashionable with the trendsetters again. Your possibly simply not a particularly fashionable person and this trend is just passing you by?

Rolex had been selling themselves short for years. It was one of their few marketing mis-steps...too much focus and availability on lower cost SS sports references that distracted the market for too long.

People are clearly willing and able to SPEND more on Rolex than even Rolex themselves fully realized until recent years. The full power of the Rolex brand has finally been unleashed and that is being proven in much higher Classic, TT and PM reference purchases than ever before. To the moon!!!

I am speaking only for myself but my tastes are definitely changing as I get older.

I don't know whether I still actually hate the cyclops or now hate the cyclops because I actually need it.

The Day Date is something I always liked but not something I ever thought I would really want but now I totally see myself rocking a rose gold with olive dial while telling people to get off my lawn.
