IWC in Top Gun Maverick

Lots of really nice IWC watches in the movie my son and I saw today. The cherry was a close up of a IWC stopwatch near the end. 😂 I’m a fan of advertising but damn that was obviously some heavily sponsored filmmaking. But it’s Fun to see more people wearing nice watches in movies like Ryan Reynolds wearing Omegas in “The Adam Project”.

It’s also very probable that I just never noticed before as watches or jewelry weren’t a big deal to me. Idk

Top Gun Maverick is the most expensive movie I ever watched. After the movie, I happened to pass by an IWC Boutique. I made the mistake of going in and ended up buying this. Worth it though. Hehehe

I’ve always been a big fan of the IWC Top Gun line of watches, so I was very happy to see them on the wrists of all the pilot characters in the movie (except for Maverick, of course).

Of course I was wearing mine while I watched the movie too, geek that I am.

you probably know IWC is the official partner of US Navy TOPGUN since 2007. It is just part of the realism of the film. TOPGUN graduates are given an IWC pilot watch with their names and call sign. Pretty fascinating back story there is.

They don’t give it to you, you have to buy it. You can choose between two watches but both have the official logo at the 9 o’clock position. You have to buy/order it through the school, cannot get the official watch through IWC.

I'm after an original 'Top Gun'/'Mario Andretti' Porsche Design 7176S - the very few I see for sale are usually too beaten up.

So quite interesting. The “top gun” SFTI they sell in store I don’t believe is the right one from the movie. IWC makes 2 or 3 STFI non-Civilian timepieces that I believe are the ones worn in the movie.

You can tell a slight difference because the watches in the movie have a red/orange color, whereas the civilian model has a red/blue logo.

The real watch features the “strike fighter tactics instructor” program patch with the targeted plane as mentioned previously it is bought through SFTI internally.

Here’s the monochrome article that details on it more.
