SS over PM or 2 tone

Just curious why so many people prefer stainless steel over PM or 2 tone? With so many stainless steel grey prices approaching PM msrp, wouldn't PM be a better purchase?

What are the pros and cons of both Steel and PM/2 tone references?

SS is less flashy, more durable, goes with everything, also much less money. I personally like the “color” better than gold.

What drives the steel models is versatility (robust, easy to wear, not loud or flashy) and desirability.

Two-tone is excellent, but not a lot of people are fans. And some why away from them because of the softness of the gold center links.

At MSRP, the steel models are great, but I think paying PM prices for steel on the secondary market is crazy.

As a watch collector that prefers to buy movements, case material is not as important. Not so long ago PM was more expensive than SS so the choice I would make was Stainless. Easier to wear, not flashy and not overpriced for the movement.

Today prices are severely skewed so some may feel differently. Tastes change, I am beginning to prefer straps to bracelets so PM is something I am not looking at.

SS is more affordable but less obtainable.

PM is more obtainable and similar to SS Grey prices. Why go with SS over PM?

Then I am not sure what answer you are looking for? Most people chasing and desperate to buy SS Rolex are not watch collectors or even people that want to wear them.

They have different priorities

PM GMT at retail is still significantly higher than a SS GMT at grey prices. Then you still have to find an AD with a 126715chnr to buy for 38,000 usd.

That's true. Just trying to gauge when/why the SS craze started. Just doesn't make sense at these secondary prices.

I have had two tutone watches back in the 80’s/early 90’s when they seemed ubiquitous, a Datejust and a Breitling Chronomat. Since then only steel with a few bronze thrown in. The cost is definitely a factor to me. I have spent way more than PM watches over the last 30+ years but the idea of a watch that costs car money just doesn’t set right with me.
More so though it’s simply a lifestyle thing. I’m an athletic, outdoorsy type guy who rarely dresses up and a gold watch would look really out of place to me.
The current price/value market the OP mentions is irrelevant to me. I have only spent MSRP on SS watches so PM ones are still way more expensive to me.

Love both SS and TT Rolex watches. Everyone needs a little gold in their collection. So many people have a collection of only SS sport models, and they are really missing out by not having some PM mixed in with at least one of their watches....

value wise it makes a lot more sense to go PM over SS when it comes to the price it costs to get into SS today but wearing PM is a lot different because it's much flashier. there's always white gold but to a lot of people it's not worth the extra money over SS

It doesn't have anything to do with most of what all these posters say. TT and PM have been falling out of favor for several years on "sport" model watches.

It's a current fashion trend, nothing more. When the new GMT TT models came out in 2005, that's all we had; folks posting about their new TT watch.

The most popular, and copied Rolex on the planet is the TT Datejust.

Yes it is!
People are paying as much as I just paid for my brand new solid gold DD for a junk metal stopwatch with a poor visibilty dial!

PM>TT>SS, PM timepiece is the most gorgeous but SS is the most reasonable price.

TT is the best of both worlds to me. Sturdy SS case and bracelet external links, with gold elements to make the piece stand out a little bit. I own a single TT watch (blue Sub41), but could totally add another TT to the collection.

SS is a very clean and classic look. The 711 CHNR is a great middle ground for those thinking about a 2 tone watch. It’s so much better looking in person. Just pay MSRP at AD.

There are more people that can afford a SS instead of a PM Rolex

SS is more affordable and holds value. Also most try to buy from an AD.

The part highlighted in red is spot on for me as well.

Pay > MSRP for SS = big no.

Funnily enough, I feel the same about paying MSRP for most PM options. I loved the days when PM was less than retail (for the most part).

I had a 16613LB. I love the 126613LB. Beautiful watches. I just prefer SS for daily use. It’s less flash. Nothing to do with trends or fashion YMMV

I have several SS pieces. Got my first PM recently - gotta say it’s on a different level and kind of ruining SS watches for me…

SS is great for a daily watch or a low key look. PM stands out and is a stunner. It depends where you are going and what you look you want. That’s why you need more than one watch.

I’ve had quite a few TT’s but never kept them. I currently prefer SS and PM only.

And I concur that I’d never pay gold prices for a stainless. There’s no comparison.

Money and “value” aside I’d always prefer stainless steel over any precious metal - at least for sports watches (so basically any Rolex). No diamonds and such for me either. I just don’t like things like that. That’s for jewelry.
