Got another call about nine months after I had to decline the first time.

Some of you commented on my thread from Oct., when I had to turn down an SD43.
https://www.rolexforums.com/showthre...hlight=decline

Since then Mrs. Lee has gotten the Rolex bug and so I went back to the AD to ask about a 278240 with mint dial for her. When the SA told me she had to let another SA sell that SD43 after I passed, I assured her I would buy a 278240 from her and wait as long as it took. Well, of course, the call came today while I was shopping for guns about 100 miles away from the AD. She said she can now place an order for me, it's guaranteed and I'd need to give a 50% deposit, which I promptly did by phone. Once my wallet recovers from this one, I think I will let her know I'd take another SD43 if offered.

How does the order system work? Did she quote a wait time? Could you order something that’s a little “hotter,” like a Daytona?

I don't know that it's a company-wide thing. I put my name on the wish list at the end of last year. If the reference I wanted had come in, I suppose they would have called just the same. I know it can be difficult or impossible to place official orders for stainless steel models. But when she said she could do it and would take a deposit, that was good enough for me. I think she said up to six mos. wait. Could be next week, could be January. But Mrs. Lee isn't in a hurry.

Another expensive hobby, firearms. Ha. Been down that road many times over the years. At least they are able to get the Mrs hers & try for your SD43 once again. Surprised to hear they require 50% deposit first.

My guess is this is the new way ADs will curate lists....serious deposits. Next step will be to make it only refundable for store credit.

It's not new, but more and more ppl are passing on models they asked for and SAs are getting frustrated (not that I care) that they have to make 5-10 calls instead of 1. Poor SAs actually have to put in some minor effort now lol and they don't like it.

A few SAs i work with confirmed this for all but the hottest models (SS GMT, ss subs, SS daytonas). Most other stuff is now a few degrees of calls down the list.

I'm in 100% commissioned sales. And if all I had to do to make money was to make a few phone calls, knowing with absolute certainty that I would make a sale after X number of dials, really very simple phone calls with no objections to overcome or power of persuasion required, I don't know that I'd eve consider that to be a sales job.

Exactly. That's not sales. That's essentially just distributing product to fulfill backorders. They could have one or two minimum wage high school kids handle all of the dialing and then just have a cashier ring them up when they come in. Only one actual SA would be needed to answer product questions at the time of pickup while the watchmaker does the sizing. What a business! LOL All tongue in cheek, of course.

And the watch arrived two days ago, so just over four months wait. Of course, I'm on a business trip now, so I had to send Mrs. Lee down there alone to collect. But she's happy and now I have some spend history with this AD. Told her I'd take the next Polar Explorer they'd let me buy.
