My Vacheron Equation of Time

This is a piece I knew nothing about until spotted it on another collectors wrist at a Vacheron Constantin event. A total and complete coincidence - I was heading to the bathroom after imbibing a few choice cocktails and a server dropped a tray of glasses in front of me. A few of us stopped in our tracks and struck up at convo which invariably led to “hey what’s on your wrist”.

This was on the wrist of another guy there and I was blown away.

I inquired with the good people at Vacheron who intimated perhaps they could make one available in good time.

Abt 9 mos later of “good time” and this arrived

What a magnificent piece! Platinum case, tourbillon, perpetual calendar with equation of time functions and a 14 DAY POWER RESERVE! Bonkers just bonkers

So for those of us science or sci fi geeks who love this kinda thing it’s just awesome

Pix in a moment

For practical reasons, mankind has divided each year into 365 and a quarter days, each day into 24 hours, and the hours into 60 minutes each. However, because the Earth's orbit is elliptical rather than circular, the time in relation to the sun varies daily. The noon zenith of the sun when it crosses the observer's meridian seldom occurs at exactly 12 o'clock by his watch. In fact solar time and mean time coincide just four times a year – on April 15, June 14, September 1 and December 24. For the rest of the year, the difference between solar and mean time varies from minus 16 minutes to plus 16 minutes.

The hero of this story is that server who dropped the tray of glasses (and the VC team)! Had that not happened, perhaps you would have chased a different grail altogether. This is a prime example of the butterfly effect.

I love that you can still see elements from the Traditionnelle line here, and yet I counted a whopping 10 elements of information on the dial side. This would be a good piece for a deserted island.

Thanks for all the comments guys - I completely forgot to mention the sunrise and sunset time indications - the watch has to be set to your latitude/longitude by vacheron before delivery - crazy!

Well that certainly lowered the standard of this thread.

Very nice VC Raclaims.

I read through a 'hands on'.

Amazing complications.

Beautiful. Big congrats! I love Vacheron's complications.

For anyone interested in some visuals: The astronomical grand complication has a breakdown video that explains some science. These auctioned at close to $2M if I recall. They made only a handful.

absolutely insane of a piece. congrats! I have to say, VC makes the widest range of watches of the holy trinity. meanwhile, AP basically makes 3 watches.

Thanks for sharing this interesting fact; I was today years old when I learnt solar & mean time coincide on my birthday!

Such a stunning piece, congratulations!
