Watches are NOT Investments
and this is why....
Really angers me when you see all these grey dealers and youtubers pushing watches as investments. I bought my silver tone AP Diver from WF back in 2017 for £13,995, it's recently had a service, new bezel, new rubber all around etc and is literally like new. For a giggle I asked WF what they would offer... £11K.... which is actually lower than the buy back guarantee that they gave me with the watch.... jokers Low and behold they have one up for £25K https://www.watchfinder.co.uk/Audema...69/item/220015 Which will no doubt sell for that as they are quite popular but really they wanna make 15K mark up on people.... Luckily now I have an in at an AD but it goes to show the greed levels out there are unreal. Rant over... Happy weekend all |

Not arguing your premise. However, just because WF is low-balling you with a buy price of 11K doesn’t mean that the current value of you watch is down nearly 3K from when you bought it. They’re one avenue for you to sell. I’d venture to say you could sell your watch independently for around 18-22K...which represents a significant ROI.
I will reiterate that I don’t view watches as investments. |

Want to know how I know watches aren’t investments? I’ve lost money on every single Rolex and Tudor I’ve sold.

Walked into an AD in Vegas, and one of the SA pointed to Lady's DJ and said
" these are the real investment pieces" |

Word Police here. I never engage with threads like this, but for some reason I can't resist now--maybe it's the all-caps-y subject-line that pulled me in.
An "investment" is simply something (asset or otherwise) that someone purchases with the aim of increasing (or maintaining against adverse conditions) value. So you cannot say that a watch is not ("NOT") an investment: it surely is, if someone buys a watch with that intention. What you might say is that a watch is not a very good investment, or that someone who buys a watch with that intention is not a very smart investor. But it's also important not to universalize from your experience, especially when that experience is (based on what you've written) singular. Others, surely, have different experiences (and stop calling me Shirley). No doubt, some watches (including some Rolexes and APs) would be considered likely to appreciate significantly. But I suspect that most (like most cars, boats, etc) would not be. But, to give a different example, just because someone buys a poor-performing stock, would you say that stocks aren't investments? Or just because someone buys a house to live in and enjoy and then sells it later at a huge profit, would you call that person a real estate investor even if it wasn't her intention to make money on it when she purchased? So, you know... words. |

the big greys aren't really adjusting their price. i don't see that watch selling for a 15k markup like you imagine. most likely they're just holding it in hopes of things bouncing back because they paid closer to 25k for that one listed, and eventually will sell it at closer to what they offered you if it comes to that

My Gulfstream V needs new seats and a media upgrade so maybe we can make a trade.

Enticing customers to buy pieces as ‘ investments” when in theory they want all that profit back over and over again, unless you sell privately like has been said Anyhoo I’ll leave it there |

You're right for most people, but watches can be an investment as well as a hobby. I keep referring back to Kevin O'leary haha

I will speculate that they wont be able to sell the watch for $25K. Anyone can ask any amount but if it’s too high it will sit. Would be interesting to keep an eye on it over the next weeks and months.

Ironically, I have as well. Albeit, that I was not willing to take two months to try and sell it and wanted to sell in a relatively short time. But yes, as a general rule, I have lost on every one that I have sold. Now the irony is, that had I held them and not sold them (and this was about three years ago), I would have broken even or profited nicely in today's market. One was a Hulk that I bought from a grey and sold at a little less then I paid but now would make about $10K.
