It seems that using M for a updated item is very popular in Europe, especially Italy. Take for example Ferrari, for their Maranello 550 when they changed the engine they changed the name from 550 to 575M which in italian stands for Modifada (Italians correct me if I am wrong)

I recall reading somewhere that the M stands for modified. Rolex changed something in the movement that denotes the change, but exactly what it is, I'm not sure. Maybe Mike or Padi can clarify this.

Not 100% sure but modified sounds good, the cal 3130,uses a balance bridge, instead of balance cock, plus the more expensive breguet over-coil,so not really a completely new movement.

Well, for starters, the older model had only 27 jewels. The "M" version is now fitted with 31. I'm sure Padi can update us on what other modifications were made.

The 14060 used the 3000 movement with balance cock. The 14060M uses the 3130 with balance bridge. While both are 28,800 beat movements the balance bridge allows the watch maker to adjust for endshake. The 14040 ran from circa 1989-1999. The 14060M from 1999-current. There were a few other minor changes but the balance bridge was the biggie. |
