Deposit at the AD

Is it common for ADs to require a deposit? How many of you have put down a deposit in the past? Did you find that you got your desired Watch quicker? What is a fair amount to require?

ADs have their own rules as should you. Personally I don't give out free loans and will move on if asked to.

A buddy of mine put down a $5k deposit about a year ago for a YG black dial Sub. He was promised he would receive it by the end of 2021. He still hasn't gotten it, Lol.

Foolish, IMO.

Depends on the AD

However if you’re putting it down at a smaller mom/pop local AD I’d be weary as Rolex has been culling their ADs. Who knows what will happen to the AD if Rolex pulls the plug. Usually the biggest money make for ADs is their Rolex distribution so if they lose that they may or may close up shop. What will happen to your deposit then?!?!

Just food for thought

Yeah, I've read some horror stories about deposits. One story I read, the guy left his deposit with them for over 1.5+ years. Watch never came, place lost their Rolex AD status and they had to refund his money. 100% interest free loan for the store!

I've also read a few where they pay for the watch fully in advance, thinking that it will help the delivery time. I think I remember one guy getting his watch just fine in a short amount of time. I'm not sure how the other ones turned out.

Not on your life. Why loan money for something you may not get and possibly lose the deposit. It's not like a special order one off.

Not sure I'd call it a deposit, but I put down a $100 "placeholder" with my A.D. for the new Omega Aqua Terra when they start getting them in, which SHOULD be soon

My AD asked me for a 10% deposit when ordering a Daytona in white gold - that's the rules for gold Rolexes. They do not charge advances for steel ones.

Depends on the seller and how much you trust them. I used to give my AD a small deposit if they requested it. They haven't asked me for one for years. I placed a small deposit on a Rolex I bought from a grey dealer to take it off display until I arrived to collected it.

If you're not happy to do it, don't.

I could understand this practice in the past, but not in today's market.

Unless you are talking about an expensive precious stone encrusted Rolex, I there is no reason for a deposit, except as a free loan. If you don't take it, the next person will. Or they could put it in the display case and watch fights break out over it.

It depends on the brand. I would be unclear how any Rolex AD can take deposits today, because they can not order anything, and they don't know what inventory is coming and even if they do know what is shipping to them, how to fill multiple orders from multiple deposits?

Indeed, many ADs refuse to take deposits.

I have like $4-5k in deposits out right now. It does not mean you get the watch faster than the next "incoming". It should mean you get the watch faster than the next guy who asks though.

BUT WHO KNOWS?!

In the past I used to put down deposit all the time, 10% or 20% depending on a watch. Thus said in the past 2 years I didnt put a deposit on any watch, my main AD took down that option as well as other AD’s I buy from. Now they put your “interest” on a watch without any deposit options.

My AD will not take a deposit. They are a regional chain jewelry store with stores in, VA, NC, and TN. The manager as well as several SA said Rolex distribution is controlled by HQ. They also said purchase history is not a factor in how HQ determines who gets a watch.

Depends on the reference more so than the AD IMO.

I paid in full for a reference at the AD Basel event on May 1 2017. The watch was delivered a few days later on May 4. Otherwise, I’ve never paid a deposit on a watch.

It's up to the AD.
In over 20 years of collecting I have never been asked for a deposit and they have always come through with what I wanted.

My wife and I paid a 20% deposit for matching turquoise oyster perpetuals as wedding gifts to each other. I think in this scenario it helped the store prioritise them and ensure we received them in time for the wedding.

I would in a heartbeat if it guaranteed my position in the waiting list.

However I asked about this possibility and didn't even get a reply to my text.

Odd they feel the need to do that. They can sell all the PM pieces they can get at full MSRP, so what difference would it make if you do not take it.

It depends on the watch and the scenario.

If you're putting in a deposit on a known shipment with a known arrival date in order to secure one piece of the shipment, fine.

If you're just giving them money in the hopes that they might attach your name to a watch without a known arrival date, no.
