Date Adjust stopped after 14 days not worn

Hi my 11 year Date Adjust was not worn while I was on holiday for 14 days.

Came back, was not working but assumed the 14 days not being worn stopped the watch.

Watch wont restart.

When winding, seems to be never ending. Frustration took over, shook watch for a few seconds, second hand moved for 3 seconds then stopped.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

Needs a service most likely if you haven’t had it serviced for 11 Years.

No such thing as a Date Adjust, can we assume you mean a Datejust?

No Rolex watch will run for 14 days, so you should certainly expect that it stopped from non-use.

A Rolex is wound fully after about 40 winds. Continuing to wind it will spin the mainspring inside, but it will never end. Only a manual wind only watch will stop when the mainspring is tight.

Frustrated? Why?

It is proper to shake it a bit when/after winding, or tap with a finger, etc., to balance out all the gear torque if it doesn't start on its own.

If you did everything right and it only "ticked" for a few seconds, or even jogged backwards a tik or so, it is usually a broken mainspring.

To start, your watch is likely named the DATEJUST, not Date Adjust. Since it's 11 years old, it will have the 3135 movement, which has a 48 hour power reserve, which means that even if fully would when last worn, it would have stopped two days after setting it down.

As for it not accepting a fresh wind ... I assume you know how to wind the watch, but just in case, start by unscrewing the crown counterclockwise until it pops out into position 0, pull crown out to position 1 and wind the watch clockwise approximately 40 turns (you can't overwind it). If that doesn't start it moving, give it a slight tap on the side. If neither start it working, send it in to the Rolex Service Center for a full service.

If I were to guess, I would say broken mainspring, but only a watchmaker will be able to determine the exact cause.

Sounds like the mainspring broke. That happened to my vintage ExpII. It was still under the seller's warranty and was fixed without cost to me.

More succinctly, it needs a service.

Also possible that it’s simply not “catching” when unscrewed. Has that happen before. Some turning back and forth for a second and it sprang into position 0 and could be wound.

Hard to think the mainspring snapped after just 11 years. It’s possible but unusual.

Best to take it to RSC, or post it to Kings Hill, Kent RSC.

That’s the best way to know.

As Tools said a gentle tap if it’s fully wound. It may be a little gunked up inside so a service would be recommended.
