Thoughts on Classic vs Modern Submeribles

I think I may want to add a submersible to my collection.

Wondering about the 285 vs the “Modern” ones especially the carbotech ones.

Thanks!

The only input I can offer is I was interested in the Carbotech until I tried one on. I enjoy the "heft" of a larger watch (44 is my limit) or a PM. To me, the Carbotech felt like a toy. They do look cool though!

Carbotech is the way to go.
How it feels "cheap" I beyond me.
The design is like nothing else on the market.

Don’t own either too but the Carbotech looks better IMO though it looks small on the wrist.

I’ve owed a 243, a 305, and still have my 25. I do love my 25 in titanium. It just has such cool vibes to it. Old school submersible. But my carbotech 979 cannot be beat. To me lightweight combined with durability is the way to go. If they made the 979 in 44mm I could kiss all other watches goodbye! Maybe.

Personally I want a bronzo but the Carbotech is just ferocious in person, just feels very special in hand, there are two camps I feel, I loved it, realised how incredible the material was to be that strong and that light and that beautiful, my father on the other hand said it looked and felt like a toy watch… generational thing perhaps? Weight = reassuringly expensive perhaps? Anyways go check out a Carbo in person you won’t regret it.

"Weight is sign of reliability and if it stops working you can always throw it at them"

That having been said, I'd take a Bronzo over a Carbotech
But, I'd probably buy the Bronzo and then immediately start saving for the Carbo
Theyre both killer pieces

In my opinion the older Submersibles are cooler. The 285 is a great 47mm, I recently tried on a PAM364, was awesome, actually felt a little tempted to get it. As others have noted Carbotech looks cool, less impressive on the wrist in my opinion. Also the very new subs (2022) don’t feature hacking seconds, which is a pretty significant downgrade.

I like the older ones a lot, but I also like the newer 47mm ones, just not carbotech, those are too light for me

Funny timing. Tonight I brought out my rarely worn 25. It’s been my carbotech for a couple of years now. But that 25 is one I don’t think I will part with. I agree with above comment about the bezel. Maybe mine needs work, but nothing like the smoothness of the carbotech. Nevertheless the 25 is a work of art.

I've owned a 305 which was an amazing daily "Beater". Since then a 1389 has come and gone. Never truly connected with that piece and found a better replacement. I now own a 968 (bronzo), 508 (Ceramic) and a 87 (La Bomba). The 87 is recent pickup and it's become my favorite sub.

106, 170, 64, 24, 25, 243, 87, 389....all amazing older model subs. New models have their place as well, just really depends what you like and want.
