Call from AD but wrong watch offered?!

I put my name down a few months ago at an out of town AD for a 31mm Datejust for my wife. It was literally while we was walking past the shop we decided to go in and have a look

We registered our interest for a 31mm Jubilee, Fluted bezel and black dial and forgot about it thinking nothing would come of it

Got a call from the lady at the AD today, saying she has good news for us - but the watch offered was a TT (Steel/YG) with a white dial?

I'm not sure if the AD is playing games trying to see what we would do, or if they are just trying to offload the Steel/YG version. The lady said that that was the configuration that she had us down for, but I am 100% certain we hadn't even discussed any TT models.

We politely declined and said we are happy to wait for the one my wife really wants.

Anybody had any similar experiences?

That TT combo really pops with the white dial. I am looking for the same in 36mm. Hopefully, turning down this one won't affect getting the watch you really want. Who knows anything in this crazy AD market.

Just trying to offload.

Keep saying "Thanks, but no thanks" until you get your desired model.

They are offering you what they have because they don’t have what you want. No conspiracy here, they have no idea your sense of urgency or what you might accept unless they ask.

Haven’t been to an AD in ages…. but a waiting list for a ladies Datejust? Didn’t realize how scarce supply is!

+2. Let them know you appreciate the call but you are holding out for what you want.

Fortunately - they actually kept your contact info. So many stories of AD “forgetfulnesses”.

Now, in basic retail sales, ABC’s…
1. Always Be Closing
2. Close on binary choice
3. Close on Color

The SA isn’t necessarily a hack. As time goes by, you and your wife could have wandered in several ADs. You could have changed your minds about black vs. white dial color, or SS vs TT. The SA was just ensuring nothing had changed.

Now…true storytime…my wife wanted a TT black Diamond dialed OP and we got it over 20 years ago. Ten years years after that, I showed her a SS OP with white Roman dial and she wanted it. Time changes choices. Whether it’s 3 months or 10 years we’ll never know.

So if it was me, and if the wife had no Rolexeses, I’d have bought the offered watch and kept my name on the list for the future SS black dial. Just my 2¢…

That’s actually brilliant, develop a good relationship with the AD and get something for the wife.

I agree with this line of thinking. ^^^

OP, no harm in offering you another reference IMO

Did she tell you on the phone or did you go in person (to find out it’s the wrong watch)?

I think it was probably an error, otherwise why not say "I know this isn't what you asked for but we have it available if you'd like it?" Some people would be interested. It's not an unpopular ladies configuration and they could sell it within days if not hours if they put it in their window. I think they're probably just disorganized.

Everybody loves a good conspiracy theory...well, almost everybody...

I doubt very much they were trying to game you, I think they were simply calling to see if you had an interest in that watch...might be that you made a good impression on them and they decided to call you.

Alternatively, you could call them back and tell them to leave you alone until they have exactly what you asked for...that might go well.

Thanks all. She mentioned that was the watch she had our interest noted for. So I'm not sure where the confusion was. Anyway, we politely declined it and updated our interest to the correct model

Secretly hoping this is one of the ADs I'm registered with, as I actually want this model (if it's the Roman numerals one!)

Yes. TT YG/Steel with Jubilee/Fluted combo. White Dial with Roman Numerals.

Stunning watch and I did try to convince the Mrs to buy it, but she was insistent on the black dial.

Although now she likes the look of the MOP

Buying it may generate some bonus points for the model you want but it's a terrible game to play with no guarantees

See I don't understand this. Why would someone who doesn't want a particular model get bonus points for buying it, when there are people who actually want it as their first choice? The AD gets the money just the same either way. It's all so messed up.

They are salespeople. It’s their job to sell you stuff you don’t think you want. This is true of every company that sells things.

Because now they've identified a customer who they can bend over for a lifetime.

They are doing what every realtor or sales person does, trying to sell you what they have. People feel like Rolex is so difficult to come by they will take anything. Easy watch to get what you want, just hold out.
