Cartier watches opinion

Hi,
is it just me that I don’t consider Cartier a watch brand? I have them in the same category as eg: Diesel, Calvin Klein, Boss etc.I find funny people telling me they are into watches and they hold a Cartier watch and dare to compare it against Rolex, brietling, VC etc… To me a swatch is more relevant for a watch rather than a cartier.

The Cartier Santos and Tank are very iconic watches. An early Cartier Crash sold for 1.65m earlier this year.

This dude seems to like Cartier......

Cartier is not those fashion/designer garbage watches you listed. It’s very well respected in horology space.

Cartier is very nice. No it is not VC quality.

Bracelet design and swap system are great in the santos. Just don't look at the dial under a loupe.

Do a bit of research. Cartier is an iconic brand, and although not the high horology of the Holy Trinity of watches, it is certainly in the class with Rolex, Omega, etc. Was the #2 most sold watches in 2021, behind only Rolex.

Have owned Cartiers for over 50 years, along with Rolex, AP, and Patek. Now own a Pasha. YMMV

While I think of Cartier as a "jewelry maker that makes watches" (rather than a watchmaker-first company), they make some damn fine watches. No, it's not Rolex or VC, but even as a jeweler-first brand, it's not "fashion jewelry" either.

I think Cartier was seen as something of a jewelry brand by watch people prior to the recent hype.

You could easily get now desirable models for not much money a few years ago.

Like almost anything style related it was only Italian collectors who really recognized them for what they were. Osvald Pastrizzi wrote a book on white gold and platinum Cartier watches called "White Cartier Bianco" so that shows you how ahead of the curve they were.

Piaget is another brand that's been vastly undervalued by WISes.

I see your point. But if you study up on Cartier’s watch history, you might change your mind. Most watches built their brand on horology. Cartier was more about design.

They're definitely more known for their jewelry, but they are definitely a respected watch brand.
Their aesthetic is a unique, classic look too.

And even in the modern times, they are doing some interesting R&D to push the envelope
