Love/Hate

Is there a watch in your collection that you have a love/hate relationship with? Mine would be the SD43, I have the wrist size for it but the caseback is a bit uncomfortable and it’s a heavy tank. Some days I want to get rid of it for something else, others it’s my favorite watch.

What’s yours?

I’ve never hated a watch but I have felt indifference. Those watches cycle back out.

I never keep a watch I don’t have unconditional love for…

I am a bit ambivalent about the first real luxury watch I bought. It's my SeaMaster 300M Gray Dial.

There are days (overcast primarily) when the watch looks incredibly beautiful as the dial lightens up and accentuates the blue skeleton hands. It takes me back to why I fell so hard for this piece. I've gotten more compliments on his watch than any other.

However, much of the time the gray dial looks incredibly dark and dull and the date window is 100% useless for my 50 y/o eyes being gray with blue numbers.

I'm torn whether to trade it in because it was ....well.... my first.

I know I would appreciate (and wear) a replacement more consistently, but I would be losing those days where my gray dial looks more striking than anything in my collection.

I don't hate anything. Hate is destructive and revolting. I've had three watches that I have failed to bond with for various reasons. Two of them had poor long term wearing comfort and have been traded in for a watch that I wanted more. The third is still here, I won't move it on yet, it's a nice watch and I might come around.

If I don't 100% love it, it doesn't stay.

We’re in the same boat OP. The SD43 is definitely one of those references for me as well. I’m on my second go around with the same watch (bought it back from the TRF member I sold it to).

It’ll always be a rotation watch for me. I love the aesthetics but comfort on the wrist just isn’t ideal.

Probably not a watch but a brand. I have a lot of modern Tudors and the more I wear them the more my Rolex watches sit.

I had that feeling with a Speedy Racing 44 co-ax. The absence of a date quickset and the poor legibility at a glance really started to bother me. I quit wearing it after a couple of years, so I let it go. Such a shame considering how I liked the looks and how crazy accurate the METAS cal. 9900 was.

Panerai in general. As long as Richemont keeps quality repair in a timely manner there is hope.

I may get crucified for this one… my 16500ln Daytona. It’s perfection in the aesthetics department but I feel like it’s too delicate and dare I say too pretty to even wear!

I really don't have a love hate relationship with any of my watches...if I find I don't like it, it gets moved on.

I actually had that issue with the previous Sea Dweller 116600. I love how it looked but too thick and the case back wasn't comfortable. Finally had to let it go.

How much time passed before you got it back? Right now I wear it once a week if that…once I started wearing my Speedmaster more often the “should I let it go?” question came in to the picture. I love the aesthetics over the Sub but really considering letting it go and picking up a sub date.

JC DeepSea; the colors, the height. Finally swapped it out. Eagerly awaiting SD43.

There are many, many watches that I love the looks of but that do not fit my wrist well. The 42mm white gold Aquanaut in green / khaki color coming to mind.

But if it doesn’t look good on my wrist or isn’t comfortable, I don’t buy.

I bought it new in 2017 and I think I owned it for 3 years. Sold it on and bought it back again this past spring.

I also have a Submariner and comfort wise there's no comparison. To me the Sd43 is a rotation watch plain and simple. I also have a speedy and a blro. Comfort is king in my books, but damn the Seadweller sure is a beauty. Kind of like dating the cheerleader in high-school ... a bit high maintenance

Darn good looking watch, why I’m having a hard time getting rid of it. It’s definitely a rotation piece, I wear the BLRO and DJ41 the majority of the time. Speedmaster was a recent acquisition but it’s also getting more wrist time, heck I even wear my Tudor BB 41 on a nato strap more…

Sadly I have traded off a few watches over the past 50 years that I wish I had held on to!
