Does the 16710 fit in a modern collection?

Hey all - looking to gather some information and opinions about a potential consolidation.

Like most, the Rolex Pepsi has been on my radar since getting into watch collecting. To fit that bill I ended up with the Tudor GMT Pepsi, my collection has expanded and contrasted since.

My current collection is the following
  • Rolex Daytona TT White dial
  • Rolex Skydweller Blue jubilee
  • Cartier Dumont XL
  • Tudor BB Pepsi
  • Tudor BB Panda
  • a few Seikos..

I have an opportunity to trade in my Tudor Pepsi, Tudor Panda, and $2,000 cash for a full set 16710.

My thoughts are this trade makes sense, and brings me down to a 4 piece collection. The 16710 could have so many different styles with bezels and bracelets. The downside I see is not having a steel Chrono or a Tudor in the collection. I guess I could pony up more cash to keep the Panda but trying to limit out-of-pocket costs on this move.

I always follow the advice of buy what you like but looking to bounce this idea off some other watch enthusiasts.

I consider my M 16710 a modern Rolex.

DO IT.

Yes. Prefer the 5 digit Rolexes aesthetic over modern ones.

What year 16710 are you looking at? I think a no holes case would qualify as more modern but generally this reference is considered neo vintage. That said I’m wearing mine today and absolutely love this reference. If you can add one I very much recommend it. In fact I let go my BLNR for it bec I realized I like the slimmer case proportions of the five digit references.

I don't know if "it fits" but to me it's MUCH better looking watch than any modern Rolex.

If you have to category the late 90's and early 2000's Rolex, I'd call them modern classics... if "modern Rolex" means post 2010-> fatter lugs.

YES! Absolutely. If I were forced to keep only one watch, it would be my 16710.

Your trading two for one but you’ll be able to play around with the rolex a lot more, as you said so many straps to choose from

16710 is a must have, I'd definitely do it. I consider a 16710 to be a modern Rolex but I'm old.

Five digit trumps “modern”. Simple as that.

Really? If people say "modern" these days they mean six digits.

Like Submariner 16610 which had the exact same shape from 1960.

It's very much different from the modern, post 2010 design.

Seems like a good move in the right direction. The Tudor GMT seemed to pacify your desire for a Pepsi til you could add it. It served its purpose, hook it up.

You can always add a modern Tudor again when you get some funds and looking to expand again.

OP, all I will say is if you've never tried a 5 digit on before, just be prepared for a very different wearing experience compared to the Tudor BB GMT and BB Chrono. The lightness and rattly nature of the bracelet, and the tin-foil clasp, really take some getting used to after the solidity of modern references.

That said, if you can get past that, then this trade is a no-brainer IMO. The 16710 is just a VERY special watch.

Exactly what I meant. It is indeed very different. I find the new designs to be clunky, squared, big and shiny - compared to the elegant and well proportioned five digit watches. My guess is the six digit watches won’t age well and 20 years from now people will be falling over each other to buy five digit (not a value or “investment” proposition, merely a design observation).
To me the current Rolex lineup looks like 1970s Fender or 1980s Gibson. (Or current Porsche…same problem there).

Decent trade - I’ve mentioned before if you can lay your hands on a modern 6 digit bracelet transforms the wearing experience - liked my 16710 but ultimately preferred the GmtC and never looked back on that swap

The 16710 is an amazing and so versatile watch! You need to bear in mind that build quality on bracelet and buckle is less qualitative than a 116710 or 126710. In the other hand the bracelet is lighter and very comfortable. If you are going on oyster I would advise to get a Solid End Links as it more qualitative. Here is mine with a few bezels.

I've had many Rolex watches over the past decades. Also several 6 digit ones. All very nice.
However, my taste evolved and Rolex gradually became just 'an other watch' in my collection. I sold most but kept two and one of them is the 16710. It is 'the Rolex' for me.

Size: 183.8 KBI’ve had my Z serial stick dial for 10 yrs and it has served me very well. No complaints. I think it’s sooo much better than the newer GMT’s… better case shape & taper to bracelet, no PCL’s and interchangeable bezel inserts. They did everything right imho on the 16710. Go for it!
