Materials as collection theme?
I’m sure this has been covered but I’m not finding proof.
Wondering if anyone here has built a collection around the “theme” of different materials. (Probably self explanatory, but what I mean: instead of, say, “land, air and sea” or “divers,” the idea would be “a stainless watch, a gold one, a titanium one, a ceramic one, a brass one,” etc.) Curious: if you do this, what’s in your collection? Rolex options would be pretty limited, obviously: afaik, you’ve got gold (albeit in a few different colors), platinum and steel. Or what would be your ideal collection? |

Ha! Touché. I walked right into the one. :) It’s like when someone asks “do you know what time it is?” And you say “yes,” and keep on walking.
Ok, let me reframe: a collection based on collecting examples of _several different_ materials. Tough crowd here! |

I'm actually curious to see if anyone is doing this too. It's not too common as far as I've seen here, but then again if you like diversity it might happen organically. Sent from my SM-G960W using Tapatalk |

I few years ago I thought about getting all three white metal Day-Dates. But if you think getting a platinum or white gold DD is difficult, try sourcing one of the few in SS...

Great topic. I personally love watches in various metals. Titanium, bronze, ss, wg, rg. Loving the variety.

I believe they made only six of the SS 6611s, right? Guessing that on the rare occasion one of those comes up for auction, they fetch a fair bit more than gold or platinum.

I think 7sins collects it this way, with the best for each kind of material.

I could see myself having fun with this concept.
The white gold dd36 I already have. I really like the Mido titanium diver. One of the ceramic speedmasters (dsotm—not the new swatch ones) A platinum VC traditionelle Stainless is the most boring one, since there are a million options. But probably a vintage WWII watch or a Sub with lume that’s aged to deep “pumpkin” orange. List goes on. |

This was my collection (mostly) at a point in time. Yellow, platinum/white, rose, SS. No idea why my wife tossed her bracelet in my winder. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
