Losing Interest

Been on the waiting list for a Sub Date for over 7months now and with each passing week I find myself losing interest in the Submariner. With the Submariner’s connection to my military unit it has always been my grail watch. However some of that luster is wearing off. I think the waiting list, AD games, price, “is it safe to wear” questions, and the status symbol the watch has become has made me realize the current Submariner is miles away from the tool watch I was first attracted to.

If I could only find an alternative that I really liked. Not really into straight up homages. I have tried the Pelagos and I liked everything about it except for the thickness. The new 39mm Pelagos would probably fit the bill except it does not have a date. Same for the BB58. The escape valve on the Omega Seamaster kills it for me.

Any other suggestions for a great tool watch.

Have you looked at an older 5-digit Submariner?

Sounds like finding an alternative is not working out very well. Could it be because there is no alternative that will completely fulfill the "itch" like the Submariner would? This is exactly how I felt about the GMT Pepsi. Came close to buying a Tudor Pepsi at one point, but I just know that I would ultimately still long for the Rolex. The only thing that would happen if I bought the Tudor is that I would be short $4K in the Rolex savings fund. Sure, it would probably "cure the hunger" a bit, but not in the long run for me.

My advice is that you should hold firm and go for the watch that you want! I don't know how you're doing it, but play the game. Go to multiple AD's, express interest, get on their "list" if they "have" one. Check in/stop by often and whenever you can. People ARE getting these watches, it's getting a little bit easier, so I would just be patient and keep trying. Worse comes to worse, pay the extra and go grey. Prices in the grey market are down, so at least there's that. Bottom line.....go for what you want! I think you'll be happier in the long run! Good luck.

Did you try telling your AD about the connection with your military unit? Most of the time it works. Also 7 months is not long, have patience bro. You are a military man this is nothing for you

Seiko / Grand Seiko have a lot of choices, and in all different price ranges.
If any watch is a true tool watch, I would say it is the Tuna.

Are you sure "losing interest" isn't just putting something out of mind for a bit as you realize it may be longer than you wanted? It could be just losing anticipation.

Maybe it's a blessing in disguise, almost like a watched pot never boils. Put it out of mind and then it will truly be a surprise when it comes.

The only thing you will truly lose interest in is the watch you decide to buy when you wanted the Sub. If you are willing to lose a few bucks in the end, buy a Tudor, enjoy it until the Sub rolls in.

Good luck !!!

Keep the faith and wait it out, you will regret buying any other “substitute” watch.

SD43 if you have the wrist for it. Should be easier to get. Matte dial is a little more interesting to look at.

I have and I really like the 5 digit look, but most I have found are almost as much as a new one.

No it is not working out for me at all. I have already lost money on the Pelagos purchase. We only have one AD in our area so not much luck trying multiple ADs. Not sure I can justify going grey and paying above MSRP. Great advice on waiting for what you really want.

I can only advice not to settle for your second choice. That’s a guarantee for buyers remorse. AD politics have nothing to do with the brand. For a little more you can have it tomorrow. The extra bucks on a lifetime enjoy never bothered me. Calculate the cost per day, less than a cup of coffee

you could've gone grey and had one months ago instead of buying a pelagos. this is why you never settle. if you don't wanna wait and can't justify going grey i don't know what your options are. maybe just trade the pelagos up for a sub through a trusted seller? ironically not justifying the grey premium will end up costing you the same regardless of whether you get a sub from an AD or grey

I tend to agree

In my experience, buying an alternative usually leads to only partial satisfaction

Losing anticipation might be part of it. I did purchase a micro brand diver that I am really enjoying. Thanks

I lost hundreds of $ on the Pelagos, grey mark up is most likely $2.5-$3k. Agree not settling is the best strategy. The micro brand diver I purchased is blue so I plan on keeping it if I ever get the Sub. Thanks

Just buy one used from a trusted re-seller. The premium is not that much, and you have the watch and can move on to enjoying it and thinking about other things.

Looks like a great watch but I am not a fan of the printed yellow indices on the black color way. I wish they would use the same indices that are on the SEAQ Panorama Date.

I personally wouldn’t let all the contextual BS cloud how great the submariner is.

I get it, but it’s regardless of the games and hype it is still one of if not the nicest and toughest watches you can get.

All that said, if you want a true tool watch, and best bang for the buck I’d get a Sinn or Damasko. Look em up. Some of the best watches out there.

Thanks. I have looked at the Sinn U-50 online, never seen one in person. Definitely a tool watch. Looks like a good watch.

Your AD is lying to you, Rolex doesn't tell the AD's who to sell to. Find a new AD.
