SS is just like WG?!?

People say, why get white gold? It looks just like Steel. Really?

No, not really. I've had a good look at a 116619LB and a WG Pepsi. The WG looked nothing like SS, having a texture, lustre, reflectivity and depth all of its own. The weight difference was considerable.

Not at all. WG is far brighter, more lustrous and heavier than SS.

You’ll notice the difference when you have both watches on hand. Looking from the distance, it’s hard to tell.

This photo illustrates the difference quite well.

But yes to the untrained eye a white gold watch will look like steel.

Btw - what the hell is the picture????

This illustrates it perfectly

WG has a warmer hue to it. SS is brighter by comparison. Platinum is next level bright compare to SS

Let’s be real from a distance they basically look the same and unless you’re into watches and know about specific models you won’t be able to tell the difference just by the look. People might see a different color hue, but they’ll assume it’s stainless steel anyways.

SS and WG look the same to me for all intent and purposes. The feeling on the wrist, however, is night and day.

When I got my WG Pepsi I was worried that I would not be able to get used to the weight. 2 weeks later it felt great / perfect and I no longer liked how my Batman felt.

I have owned a black ceramic Daytona for 2 years and recently I added the WG steel dial on oysterflex. Sure they make look the same to the untrained eye. The steel with the PCL's may even attract more attention but the heft of the WG is unmatched. I don't think I even want to keep the ceramic daytona anymore. I couldn't care less how other people won't notice that my watch is gold.

It depends upon a number of factors and pics alone are not necessarily a good guide.
I personally find the Rolex WG to have a very slight yellow(warmer) tinge to it when held beside a Rolex SS watch which is a little bluish to my eye.
An Omegasteel watch may be of a brighter appearance.
But a 316SS watch will look different to a 904SS watch even when brushed or polished, but I suspect Omegasteel may be closer to 316SS.

There are so many variables such as surface conditioning to take into consideration.
Just looking at my 316SS GS and it's so highly polished that it's almost comparable to my WG wedding band at first glance to my eye

All I know is that I believe I can tell Rolex WG from just about anything else as it's so different. Even when one removes context.
Canopus gold as posted in this thread may require more study on my part

Agreed. In most cases, it’s not a side by side comparison. From 10 feet away, I’m hard pressed to tell. Likewise, unless you’re “in the know,” I don’t think it’s obvious that my Yachtmaster’s bezel and dial are platinum.

Canopus Gold, like Rolex WG, has a warmer hue but can be indistinguishable from steel to the untrained eye

People can say what they want. Who cares.. No need to justify to anyone as to why you bought white gold..

All White Gold is not the same. White Gold used to be plated with Rhodium to give it a shinny white appearance. The reason is that White Gold has a little yellow tint to the color. It was not that long ago Rolex changed the composition of the White Gold that it uses. The new composition does not require any plating as the metal is does not have this yellow tint. Personally, this new White Gold appears to have a grayish tint. The closest Stainless Steel looking metal is probably Platinum.

On the one hand, I can very, very clearly see the differences in metal hues. This image captures it perfectly.

On the other hand, I can't tell whether I can objectively see the differences so clearly or if my mind is playing tricks because I know which is which based solely on the watch configurations in the photo.

It's a good contrast between the two. However Omega's Canopus Gold looks more like silver than like white gold to my eye. Still very different than stainless side by side, but also different from typical white gold.

As an aside, seems like we're seeing more and more "proprietary" gold alloys from watchmakers (Omega with its Sedna and Canopus, and Lange with its Honey).

Let’s be honest here, the photo shows very little difference. The only way you know is by the reference numbers. Put just the bands out in a row and let’s see if we can tell the difference.

To the CASUAL observer, they do look the same. That's why I like white gold.
