Outgoing: Explorer 124270

This forum is ripe with “incoming posts” where the poster talks about their new acquisition, but there is never “Outgoing” posts about watches let go.

I think buying _and selling_ are both parts of a collector’s activity, so here I go.

I sold my Rolex explorer 124270 36mm.

This watch is beautiful, and I love its simplicity and size. This is the watch that made me realize that I like the look of 36mm cases better than 40mm. I can’t go back to 40mm watches now.

I sold it because I’m in the process of reconsidering my relationship with this hobby (but more on that in a later post).

PS. Yeah, not sure if this trend will catch on :silly:

Beautiful watch that I too let go for financial reasons (and also realizing I don’t need multiple Rolex).
I’m interested in hearing about how you are reconsidering this hobby of ours.

A great idea. Interesting to understand why people move watches on.

You must have tiny wrists as it looks big on you. No wonder you don’t want to go back to 40.

Congratulations … I think

If watches are no longer your thing, then I’d sell it on as well. Hope you find a new hobby to fill the void

Wow! Thanks for sharing this! I've been wanting the 39mm for a while. But I look forward to learning more about how you came about with this decision. It's a very expensive habit (love the 'outgoing' title!

The Explorer is a great watch, and good luck as you reconsider this hobby, but let’s not forget one thing - you’ll still need to know the time!!

The photo angles don't help either. Lugs hanging way off one side and inset a bunch on the other. A more direct angle would make it look better proportioned, but agreed, not an 8" wrist we're seeing :)

Sheesh looking at that picture a 40mn would look like a satellite dish on your wrist. Yes 36 is the way to go my friend.

Thanks all for your replies

PS yes, those pictures don’t do it justice. Something to do with the perspective. Here is a better angle:

I can’t take any new pictures though, for obvious reasons.

Yes, the watch looks PERFECT at this angle. I have 6 3/4" wrists and I love the fit of the 36mm Explorer as well.

Watch collecting is an expensive hobby - but very gratifying! Do you think you'll get out all together or maybe go to a very normal and healthy one watch collection?

Best of luck with whichever way you go!

Also, I just sold my 124270 as well. I loved that watch, but I also have the 124273 (two tone version) and just picked up a 126900 Air-King. So three similiar watches and one had to go.

I had two 36mm watches and two 42mm watches in my collection and wanted a bit more variety of sizes. I now have 36, 40, 42 and 42 so it covers the bases better.

Really intersting topic and one I'd never thought to discuss before!
