Icon6 For the Daytona fans

Hodinkee still sometimes comes through from time to time with interesting content.

Here is an article with some great photos and good content:

"Understanding The Rolex (Non-Paul Newman) Daytona
It's the icon to end all icons, collectible and controversial in equal measure. Here, we explain everything you need to know about the crowned chronograph from Rolex."

Thank you Cru, I needed some reading material today.

They take a lot of flack here, but I’ve always enjoyed their “Reference Points” segments. They did one on the GMT with Eric Wind that was outstanding as well.

Information overload! My first introduction to the Daytona was seeing a friend of a friend wearing one as we were graduating high school in 1974. It was his family’s gift for tge milestone, he bragged that it cost $250!
If only I’d known….

I’m just here for the pictures, and these mint examples of some vintage ones are pretty spectacular.

Thx for sharing.

Well, that’s about everything you’d ever want to know about the Rolex Daytona.

Great article … thanks for posting.

I know this model (Daytona) gets a lot of love on this forum and among watch enthusiasts... but if I am being perfectly honest I had absolutely no idea or notion of the Daytona chronograph whatsoever and had zero association of it as a "Rolex" until I was well into my 30s and more entrenched in this hobby.

To call this "the icon to end all icons" is a little sensational and disingenuous, in my opinion. I doubt the average person would recognize a Daytona or know what it is. It just looks like any other chronograph watch. An average person is probably not squinting and thinking "oh hey there are screw-down pushers and offset sub-registers, must be Rolex!"

I think the TT jubilee Datejust and YG DayDate are far more iconic, especially with that signature cyclops.

Great article! Thanks for the link. I really prefer the original narrower style bezel. IMO the watch looks so much better with the narrower bezel than the current model with the fat bezel. Perhaps at the next anniversary they will fix it and make it 41mm. Imagine that! The demand would be crazy!

I agree with this, and I would add the Rolex Submariner to the Two Tone DateJust, and the Gold DayDate, as the 3 iconic / most recognizable Rolex watches ever made.

PS … But I do like my Daytona 116500LN !!

They issued an associated “Daytona Reference Points” video on YouTube as well.
