Years in the making….
After seven years of lurking around on this forum and lusting after a Submariner, I am elated to make my first post and share that I am the proud new owner of a brand new 124060!
Apologies in advance for the novel, but this has been a long time in the making…. I have been into watches for quite some time, but was never in the position to even consider a Rolex (or any higher-end watch for that matter). Many years ago I was bit by the Rolex bug and set my sights on the Submariner for it’s iconic design. I have always been drawn to the Sub’s history as a sporty tool watch and its ability to be worn with jeans and a t-shirt, or dressed up for nicer occasions. Fast forward to about seven years ago in the early progression of my career, and I was finally in a position to dip my toes in the world of Swiss watches. I still was not in a position to drop $7k on a watch, but lucky for me Tudor had been revived a few years earlier. I’ve always been drawn to dive watches and the recently introduced Black Bay Blue caught my eye. After a bit of research on the brand and understanding its history and linkage to Rolex, my mind was made up. I saved my hard earned money and decided the Black Bay would be my first true watch. Luckily my wife is a very understanding woman and was more than supportive. So, on a weekend in NYC on the back of a business trip, my wife and I ventured into Wempe and I walked out with the watch. I couldn’t have been more excited and was absolutely enamored with my purchase. That watch lived on my wrist every single day for seven years. Throughout those seven years I enjoyed the Black Bay every time I glanced down at my wrist. But, I always knew a Submariner was my grail. I made an agreement with my wife that when I made Director at my firm the Submariner would be mine. Fast forward about five years and I found myself as a newly minted Director! But, times had changed, and along with it, my priorities. About a year earlier we welcomed a new baby girl into our family and purchased a new house, so dropping $8k on a watch didn’t seem so prudent. On top of that, the world was just introduced to a new pandemic and it seemed like everything was on fire. So I made peace with the fact that a Submariner was not in the cards and continued to enjoy my Tudor while I set my eyes on the next milestone. My wife and I both agreed that the next major career milestone would warrant the Submariner. So off I went, working diligently with my eyes set on the prize. About a year later and a big promotion achieved, it was finally time to get the Sub. BUT, unlucky for me, the market for Rolexes had gone absolutely bonkers. I went to multiple ADs and was met with the same response. “Be prepared to wait a couple of years.” I remembered reading about the gray market from prior research, but to my dismay, found that an even more impractical route as Subs were going for nearly 2x MSRP at the time. I was thoroughly bummed, but decided it wasn’t meant to be. By this point I had developed a strong taste for stainless sport watches and found the newly released Zenith Defy Skyline. The brand’s history really spoke to me, and I loved the modern design. So I went to an AD when it was first released and was blown away with it on wrist. It was about the same cost as a Sub at MSRP, but I wanted something to commemorate my new career milestone, so I got the watch. I absolutely love the watch and think it is great, but what I quickly learned is that it is not a Sub. So the yearning continued. I tried playing the AD game and found that I got absolutely no traction. I put myself on several lists and periodically checked in, but I didn’t even get the sense that I was being seriously considered for a watch. Fortunately during this time, the gray market started to cool and prices came back down to a somewhat reasonable level. Long story short (or maybe not that short!), I decided that paying a premium in the gray market was something I was ok with to get the watch today and be able to start enjoying it. Of course I care about the price of a watch and don’t want to pay an obscene premium, but I plan to keep this thing forever. So, after many years of yearning, I leveraged this forum and reached out to several of the well respected trusted sellers to find a BNIB Sub. And…..I am happy to share that I am the proud new owner of a no date Submariner 124060! |

Congratulations...
Now the best thing you can do for yourself is quit this forum. Delete everything. You dilly dally here, that watch you worked so hard to get will never be enough, the grail is a moving target, and you'll ask around to find out how much you can sell your kidney for to buy another watch... Best wishes. |

Congrats, OP!
Time is worth something. Playing the AD games would have cost money for a “maybe”. Might as well spend it on a “definitely”. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Congratulations! I too paid a premium this year for my first Rolex, the 14060M two line. No regrets at paying a few thousand Australian dollars over new retail price. It is what it is.. but Rolex is money in the bank, slightly more or less. If you’re people like us who have to work for years for one Sub, no regular AD spending etc.. what you’ve done is definitely worth it. Congratulations!

Big congrats! I remember well that first Sub feeling. Was about 15 years ago for me. Remember it like it was yesterday.
