Dealer Cost vs. Customer cost

I have seen Rolex watches marked down online. I am interested in buying a Rolex but I really want to buy one from an AD at the lowest possible price. So whats the bottom line I can expect off a watch? Does it vary from dealer to dealer? How much profit does a dealer make in the sell?

Varies from dealer to dealer and from watch to watch. Some dealers will not offer any discount. Some dealers will only offer discounts on TT and gold models. Generally you would be doing good if you can get a discount between 10 to 20 percent.

The consensus is that mark-up is around 40%...

But that does not translate to "profit" - there is overhead and maintenance labor of the required Rolex displays.... then there is the wage or salary of the sales staff.....

Depends on where you live and where you buy......... most Rolex Dealers are Jewelers and don't need to push Rolex watches to stay alive.........the Rolex and it's displays are a way to get you in the store......... you look at the nice, high priced Rolex watches, then buy stuff that is marked up 60-100% or so....

On the West Coast, discounts on Stainless models are hard to come by, but the TT and other precious models can be had for 10-25% off, sometimes more ...

The mark up is 66% based on a buying price of 40% off retail.

As Larry has said, overheads are high at a Rolex AD but some discount can be had on some models.

I have a family member that is an exec at a large jewelry concern that happens to be a AD and I was told that Rolex frowns upon any discount past the 10% area. Rolex is very protective of suggested retail pricing.

Rolex frowns upon discounts of 20% or more. In Michigan here you can get 15-20% without any bargaining on SS, more on TT, even more on Gold.

So a Deep Sea that cost $9,250 with a 15% discount should be $7,863 with a savings of $1,387.50. Is that reasonable or will they give you the "shuffle"? Because you can find them all day long online with a 10% discount or around $8,500. I like the 20% better giving me a $1,850 savings bringing the total to $7,400.

Sooo, if the mark up on a $9,250 watch is 40% then it costs the AD $5,550? Seems the 20% off is a good meeting point (half way).

It's funny because I already had 1 AD tell me that they are an authorized Rolex dealer and they are not allowed to discount at all. She was implying that no Rolex dealer will ever discount. Another AD told me right on the spot that I can get 15% discount and I never even asked for any discount but was just looking at a watch.

I don't think its funny (ha ha) but funny (where is my $1,387.50). That $1,387 is a good start toward another watch.

Same thing, an AD I walked in to offered me 15% off the GMT IIC right off the bat, I didn't even ask. They commented on my Daytona, (don't know if that had anything to do with it or not).

So we have established 15% is a definate possibility. Now to go from 15% to 20% is the deal breaker I guess.

no discount on SS models here in my area.. but i managed to get an 8% discount on a gmt iic near the end of the month. the sales manager had to actually phone the owner to approve the discount. he then said that was the first time he ever gave a customer a discount on a sport SS model. not sure if he was telling the truth or not..

In this economy, if one AD says they don't discount, just go to the next dealer that will. Some of the chain stores have limitations on how much they can discount based on some corporate policy, but the independent stores will be more flexible on pricing.

Before my purchase, I shopped around between 5 different Ad's and the best deal I could get between south and central Florida was 15% on a TT sub, but they woould not discount any SS.

WOW! that's great. I'm not in the market for another Rolex right now but that is a great discount on SS sports models.

This year I got about 23% off my LV at an AD here in WI. That being said I also bought a TT GMT IIc from a different AD and he would not budge a penny... This was before I had found this forum, I just thought that they had to sell at cost, boy was I wrong and pissed. I agree with the previous post, keep looking for the right AD.
