Never thought I would face this - 226570 or 7900v

Could someone help me figure out here?

Both Rolex Explorer II polar (226570) and Vacheron Constantin Overseas 7900v-black are the GMT watch I've been looking for. Fortunately, I got calls from the AD at the same time and I can only pick one.

While I have the luxury to get either one. From the value stand-point, I feel like Rolex is going to retain somewhat 10%+ from the MSRP for the next 10 - 20 years, while VCO might retain at this level (10%)/ fall below MSRP/ take off - becoming the next AP/PP.

I don't think I will sell the watch I get, but knowing explorer II is safer at retaining its value (because the general market size) flavors me to it. However, somewhat in my gut tells me to acquire my first VC. I just don't know which I should confirm.

Can anyone tell me your thoughts? It could be from any angle/ perspective.

hope this helps, this is a thread I started comparing GMT-Master II vs VC Overseas Dual Time 7900v at the time of decision of purchase:
https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=822967

I ultimately went for GMT-Master II(126710BLNR) in the end vs. getting the VC Overseas Dual Time.....the GMT-Master II is the most classic pilot watch in partnership with Pan-Am along with Rolex quality and timekeeping

Current collection: 1) Rolex Submariner(116610LV), 2) Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional(311.30.42.30.01.006), 3) Rolex GMT-Master II(126710BLNR), 4) Breitling B01 Navitimer 43(AB0138211B1A1)

The Rolex Explorer II will not be finished to the standard of the VC, which has the Geneva seal both on the case and the movement. However, the Rolex ExpII costs a lot less to purchase, will be more rugged, and will serve you just as well. I also think the Rolex will retain value better than the VC, so to me I'd go Rolex Explorer II and never look back.

As an aside, what's in the rest of your collection?

Thanks SS Oyster, Wahlberg, DangWang.

I have a milgauss black dial 116400 and a 50th red sea dweller 126600 mk ii.

I am still down for more thoughts. Please feel free to share :)

I'd take the value and safer buy aspect out of it.
If both watches were equal in those regards, which do you prefer?

I'd take the Explorer. The only significant parameter is that I like the Explorer a lot more.

It’s pretty hard to take Value out of the equation when one watch is 3 times the cost of the other one.

I yearned for the exp II. Bought from AD 6 months ago and have never worn. Just haven’t bonded with it. Finish not on par with others and it just isn’t Rolex enough for me i.e. lacking pcls and a bit big. Realised too late.

I prefer the Explorer II. A very rugged and good looking watch that can be worn for most activities. The VC is also quite nice but for the cost and potential for loss in the secondary market being much greater than the Rolex, I would not. There are models in the VC lineup that would make me go that way but this is not one.

another thing I wanna mention is that 7900v's dial is more messy to look at.....the Rolex way is more intuitive with the cyclops lens showing the date instead of the subdial on the VC.....

on the Rolex, it's much cleaner look~

Tough decision. Try them both and get the one that you like better. Long term I think they will both do well. Congratulations on the call and post us a picture of what you decide.

You should take the Explorer 2 Polar. Great watch.

Maybe your gut is ready to venture beyond Rolex, but you're not really ready. The two are not considered in the same category.

If market price value retention is most important, then Rolex, Patek sports lines or auction grade, AP Royal Oaks or auction grade, Journe, LE Lange, LE VC, Roger Smith, George Daniels, Dufour are the only ways to go.

Really is a hard decision to make. You could decide to try both and see if you can get one of any that you like as a better pick. IMO, I really think I’ll pick the latter over the former. Congratulations on whichever you end up settling for.

The VC is my choice, a level above the explorer but I have never liked the explorer watches.

VC between those two, especially if you already have another Rolex.

You didn't mention which one you like better, so I guess this is out of the whole calculation. So obviously take the Rolex, but remember to keep it in the safe to retain as much value as possible.

This is actually not my plan. I won't say I will beat up the watch, but I will def wear it on daily basis (carefully).

VC. The caveat being if you have good eyesight. I loved my dual time, but I couldn't see it very well. I switched to the VC three-hander because of it.

Hiding the GMT hand helps a lot.

Hiding the hand definitely made it cleaner. I had more issue with the date wheel.
