Explorer II trade forward Explorer I 39mm

This is something that's been on my mind lately.

I have a 42MM black dial ExpII that used to be my main watch for some time. Explorer line was always a favorite of mine next to the vintage sub.

Size wise it was always the maximum for what I can pull off, and to be honest, there is a time when I stop going to the gym and I find it a bit too big.

I pulled the trigger on the blue BB58 and since day one it became my daily watch. I just like the size so much more.

That got me thinking, more and more, to follow my heart and proceed with my trade toward 39mm explorer I. Am I crazy? That simplicity of exp1 is drawig me in, what can I say.

I say go for it. I do love the Explorer II but it is a big watch. Had one for a bit but just too big for my 6.3" wrist. Ended buying one again (the Polar) but for my niece. She likes a big watch. I now have the Explorer 36mm and love it. I have tried on the 39mm a few times and always really liked it.

I love my Exp39, but if you like the size of your BB58 you need to keep in mind the dial of the Exp39 is going to be much larger than the dial of the BB58 visually. Here's a side by side photo I found. The Exp39 will wear smaller than the 42mm Exp II, but I'm not sure it will wear THAT much smaller.

mgsooner, thank you for that photo, I am aware of big dial, it's what I like. I tried it on few times,

I like tool watch essence of explorer, both I and II. It's why I like Rolex, and it reminds me why I liked it in the first place. I never take it off, it's meant to be worn.

I will sleep on it few more days, but I think I will proceed with searching for a best way to trade it inside Europe.

And honestly, getting the smaller size makes sense because you'll wear it 'more'.

Oh, and remember, we're all crazy. Just in case you needed reaffirmation

Why not a black dial, 40mm ExplorerII? Seems like that would be perfect.

Ahhh gotcha. I think trading to the 39mm (MKII) is a great idea.

The 39mm Explorer I is a great looking watch, so if it would fit you better I say go for it! Are you going to try and get the lumed numerals or the original?

Have had them both, I like the Explorer II for the GMT function, but like the simplicity of the Explorer I. I currently have the 216570 Explorer II.

I’d also say go for it.

Regarding the size though, as mentioned above, you may be surprised that the 39mm wears bigger than the size suggests. Some are turned off by this if they’ve never seen one in person.

Regarding wearability, I think that can be defined in 2 ways. Firstly, it will wear about the same with respect to sizing from a 3rd person view but more importantly, it should feel smaller/less bulky and more comfortable on your wrist…and I think that’s what you’re after.

Same goes with the sub-c…The ex1 can visually appear just as big or sometimes even bigger than a sub-c but it does not wear as big and chunky as the sub-c.

Good luck!

Amazing watch that needs to be worn to truly experience. Go for it and you will never look back!

I had a 42mm Explorer II and a 39mm Explorer at the same time. Sold the 42mm Explorer and kept the 39mm. Says it all!

Absolutely, man. I’ve never understood people saying don’t do this or that because it will look small or big on an individual. It’s absurd. I’m large but not Shaq. And my daughter wearing a 47 mm Panerai looks ridiculous but it could be tiny on Diesel. We all come in a huge variety of sizes, heights and weights. Consider the opinions you like best, then form your own and go for it.

No, not crazy at all. I think the Exp 39 pairs well with a BB58 blue in a collection. Generally speaking 39mm is a great size

Thank you all for chipping in, I just wanted to make sure I'm not downgrading my watch at all.

Let's do this :)

Haha, I did somehow expect this, like-minded people pushing me in the "right" direction.

However, the main reason for ridding of ExpII ist that feeling that it's too big for my wrist, and with the arrival of the smaller BB58 that feeling is stronger than ever.

I really like my Explorer II's and enjoy the size and wear. With that said, if it is too large for your wrist then time to move on and get what you want. Go for it.

Oh don't get me wrong. I still REALLY like my EXPII. I just dont like the way I find it too big.

I guess I made my decision sone time ago, I will just proceed with selling it or try and find best deal, 1:1 might be on the horizon I hope so.

I wouldn’t do that.
The ExI 39mm wears big and is a lame duck.
