Rolex Enthusiast, Hobbyist, Collector... Which Are You ??
I might go out on a limb and say that most of the members here are Rolex Enthusiasts.... They either have or want one, or maybe have a couple... They love the brand, and frequently take that love to extremes.... You know the type... RSC only, and no non-authentic part ever touches their baby..
We also have the collector...... This is the guy who knows watches very well and scours the country looking for that next example that helps further define their "collection". This guy knows his discipline in depth and can tell by looking at a dial the approximate date, model, and inner workings based on his studies. I might say here, that somebody with a few or more Rolex watches may not actually be a collector as there is no direction in what they have; they are more accumulators rather than a true collector.... but could be well on their way. Then we have the Hobbyist. This is the guy who may take a course or two in watchmaking, isn't afraid to do his own polishing or other technical mechanics, and probably knows the workings of many watches inside-and-out.. This guy is no different than a model train Hobbyist... it's his realm to do as he pleases as he delves more and more into the Hobby of mechanical time pieces.. He has the tools and the skills to enjoy the past-time. I may also go so far as to say that some members may fit into more than one category.............. Me, for instance. I have a couple of true collections.. and I've gone to lengths to ensure their authenticity and period correctness. But, it's also a hobby. I've welded together broken bracelets, re-machined corroded cases, put Omegas clasps on Rolex bracelets (and other unspeakable things); taken watches apart and sometimes got them back together, and don't mind a little expense if it further advances my own fun and understanding... Can you pigeon-hole yourself ? What kind of Rolex aficionado to you see that you are, or may become...

Wrist Watch Monogomy
I'm an enthusiast. I love Rolex: I enjoy seeing them in the wild as well as wearing them. I'm too poor (or cheap) to build anykind of collection. Plus I've always been a "one watch kinda guy." I love to build up history with a watch. I like to wear it constantly and share life's little moments with it.

I just like Rolexes!
Wouldn't call myself an enthusiast since I wouldn't take my watch to an RSC. I believe in supporting independents whom you build long relationships with. Not a collector either since my motley group was assembled based on personal choice, with no pattern or heritage considered. Not a hobbyist either since I wouldn't dream of taking my watch apart myself. I just like em. |

I'm an enthusiast in that I own a couple and like the brand for the build quality it is renowned for. However I know nothing about the technical aspects of these or any other watches. I don't nursemaid anything I own, if it fails me it's got rid of. No feather pillows for mine I'm pleased to say.

I refer to myself as a "Rolex Affectionato". Because it sounds snooty.

enthusiast, who is willing to learn. Although interested in reading about how people tinker with their watches e.g changing bezels I feel best left alone as I know I would mess up. Have used some of the tips to polish acrylic and touch up a bracelet

Interesting question!
I'd say I'm all of them, and also a "user"; no safe queens for me (yet, I might add ). I am very enthusiastic about watches, especially Rolex and Tudor. I have several, and have flipped through a few. There is a theme in my collection, and what I am looking for. Most of all I collect knowledge (and this relates to a lot of things I do). I am also a hobbyist, since I've learnt how to disassemble (and assemble) an automatic watch with date complication, and have the tools. I did attend the first class of TZ Watch School ten years ago. So, thats me: User, Enthusiast, Collector and Hobbyist... in that order I believe. If I didn't have so many other interests I would most certainly spend more time and money on collecting watches... and perhaps I will some day, and when that happens you will notice it on my post count. This forum gives a lot of inspiration to do that! Best, A |

Enthusiast for me. I have tried to learn as much as I can about them since I made a commitment to actually *own* one. I love to learn about them, but I think one is enough for me...had to take a while to find the perfect ONE, however! (It is on the way and soon to be revealed.) I have always felt that Rolex was top of the line, and I don't have any (current) desire to stray into other brands.

Bought Rolex because it happened to fall into my collection pattern.
Not above making a FrankenRolex for my own use. Enjoy the brand, but not exclusively. So, I don't know. |
