Which Holy Trinity Purchase would you make?

Looking at branching out from the Rolex and Omega pieces I have and picking up one watch from the big 3 this year.

The ones I like are

Patek 5212/a

I like the weekly calendar and the quirky handwriting on it. Also a steel Patek.

VC 7900v with the black dial. Something about the black with red hands and the rubber strap/ bracelet look really good. Plus I don’t have a dual time watch in the collection.

Royal Oak “Kasparov” I like the size of this one and I don’t have a chrono in the collection either.

Which one would you go with? Any that I’m missing out on in the 20-40k range?

I’d go VC dual time. Perfect all in one watch with the strap changing system.

I had the AP 25860 Kasparov--flipped it after a year. Couldn't get used to the bracelet--wasn't that comfortable. Plus it caught a lot of scratches.

The VC 7900v as shown above would definitely be on my list, though. For PP, a 5196J for under 20k would also make my list...

Yes I like the 5196j too such a classic. I just don’t have many occasions to wear a formal dress watch.

From the watches you have listed, I would go with VCO Dual Time.....it's a versatile watch with 3 straps interchangeable system....

for the PP you have selected, I wouldn't go with 5212 because it's a very busy and cluttered dial and not what a traditional Calatrava represent; for a calendar watch, I would go with 5396, 5205, or pre-owned 5146 instead

Royal oak for me- buy conversion kit and wear it on rubber, bracelet and alligator.

I've owned the VC dual time and AP ROC, hands down would take the AP. The finishing and quality of the case and bracelet IMO is superior to VC. Subjectively I do not like the bezel on the VC and the bracelet felt cheap compared to the AP, I flipped the VC in less than a month.

I would go AP in this case. 5212 seems a bit busy to me. I had the blue dial 7900 and moved on from it. The case felt a bit larger and sat pretty tall on the wrist.

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice piece. However, it just didn't feel special anymore within a year of ownership. The finishing is not on par with AP in this case and the bracelet was underwhelming.

The AP bracelet is on another level and the RO feels special every time I wear them.

A couple of people here comment about the finishing on AP being better than VC, can you elaborate?

Having handled them both I felt like the quality of finishing on both is of the highest standards, the AP is just finished / designed to look a lot more blingy / flashy in my opinion vs the VC which is more understated.

VC for me plus as you said you don’t currently have a dual time in your collection

The finishing for these 3 watches are all machined. If you are looking for higher level of finishing with cuts on the anglage, VC Cornes de Vache in SS comes to mind. It is slightly above 40k but you get a horological trinity chronograph with high level of finishing on the Lemania movement. The size is great and the cow horn lugs are lovely. Hope this helps.

I’ll probably be in a minority, but I love the 5212. There’s something really whimsical about it that makes it stand out in the sea of bland corporate iterations on a generic theme.

If you don’t need the WR, it’d be my choice. (VC Cornes de vache would make a difficult choice.)

Not worried about water resistance I would wear a submariner to be around water. There’s just something neat and a bit different with the 5212.
