Advice on getting "real" with my AD

So I live in a small town on the east coast of FL and we have one AD in my town. Since 2020 I've been going in there asking if I can buy a Rolex, obviously getting rejected about "no supply". Then once they got those display models I started going more frequently to see which I really liked and each time spending 30 mins chatting with the team about watches and whatnot. I finally told them I'm interested in the Rhodium YM and the owner told me he'd put me down for when one came in, etc. I return about every 6 weeks to check inventory and talk watches and I know they know who I am as the owner has come out the back and said hello. Anyways, its been now close to 3 years since I've been going in and really feel like a lost cause. The last time about 6 weeks ago I asked if they get any updates from Rolex which they told me "no". Any suggestions on what I should do or ask? I'm afraid I'm gonna go buy grey and then the next week get "the call" lol. Appreciate any help :)

Should be obvious by now that you need to buy other things from them. You can either keep doing what you are doing hoping for the best, throw money at them on non-Rolex things, go grey.

Tell them what you told us. "Hey, it looks like this isn't happening for me, I think I might shop around for it elsewhere..." And see their reaction. You're the customer, and they haven't sold you anything. If they shrug and say "yeah, can't blame you for doing that" then you have your answer....it was never their intention to sell you one. If you get a different type of answer...well, you'll have to judge for yourself.

Yeah, sounds like that AD you're dealing with is simply not gonna come through. Are you only visiting that one store? I would try to visit multiple AD's and visit each on a regular basis. No sense just limiting yourself to just that one place.

If you continue to do the things you are doing, you should expect to get the results you have gotten.

Thanks for the feedback! I have bought jewelry from them before thinking that would change the game. Unfortunately all the other AD's are 1hr + away from me and I don't have the time to visit each frequently. I did buy a Tudor Black Bay last year from an AD in Boca while on vacation, so maybe I should email the SR there and ask if any watches are available. My game plan is to go to this AD tomorrow and tell them I'm gonna buy elsewhere and see what they say, then email the Boca AD. I'll eventually get my first Rolex and will report back!! Cheers!

Could also be an allocation issue based on the size of your AD. Have you asked about other models aside from the YM?

Def need to play the system, multiple ADs in your pocket if needed.

Luckily my AD has been stellar and only plan on doing business with them.

You only have to visit once, then keep in touch with text/email. That's what I did

I'd drive to the nearest city that has multiple ADs and pay each a visit. IMO, that's not a watch you should have that much trouble getting, even without being a big spender. YM, SD, Exp, AK all seem like watches a dealer should be able to supply within six months if at all.

If the first sentence is true, then wasting your time with this AD is futile because they will be gone soon.

OP, that Yachtmaster is really not that “in-demand”…if you haven’t gotten it in 3 years, you probably will not from the AD.

Try another AD with your sob story about 3 years waiting and you are trying to commemorate ____ important life event and you will get one within 3 months, I bet.

If there are non-Rolex item you are interested (Tudor?), you should try to go back to your AD and say you are interested in a Tudor BB, etc., and say it would be great if you can buy both at the same time, to make my purchase valuable. Otherwise, I might get the Tudor elsewhere.

I think your AD will work hard for you, and should have your YM within 3 months.

I recently helped a mate to get the new AK, and we told the AD to get a Tudor Royal for his wife as Xmas. The waiting time was 2 weeks once we let them know we are interested with a Tudor Royal as well.

I’d give up on them. As mentioned, YM isn’t a high demand model. I’d just go grey. That’s what I’ve done. No games, no hassle, get the watch you want and enjoy. Sure you pay a premium but will that premium matter in 2+ years of enjoyment.

I waited a while for that same YM model. It was around a year but it came in. Though it is not as in demand as a sub etc. multiple ADs said they also are much more scarce in allocation. Just be patient and honest, it will come through soon. Flippers can’t really make any money on that watch now so it will eventually come up.

Alternatively you could probably buy it gray for a bit over MSRP after tax if you want.

You’ve been waiting three years…three years! The good news is the pricing from grey dealers is getting better, spend some time with a retailer who can and will actually sell you something you want.

You can either go grey, go to another AD, or buy more stuff such as high-margin diamonds/jewelry at the first AD.

This.

Call every single AD that you’d be ok driving to if they said they have the watch you’re looking for.

Expand your options.

There are several threads with the general topic „Cringe things people do to suck up to Rolex ADs.“ Pick the three most extreme ways to debase yourself and do those for the next 3 to 5 years. Report back occasionally to let us know how that’s working out for you.

Or buy so much jewelry and other non-Rolex watches you don‘t want that the YM you might finally get will really cost at least 3x the retail price.

Or you can pay way over retail on the grey market because you just have to have that YM.

Plenty of options!

3 years, no call is coming. They got real with you. Find another AD or buy it grey. That wasn’t an incredibly popular watch 3 years ago, and it still isn’t. You should have easily been able to get it within 3 years.

Find a friend with an AD, have them introduce you. I did this a few years ago, worked wonders.

Imagine a friend of yours told you he'd spent 3 years in the "Friend Zone" with a girl he had a crush on
You'd call him a moron, wouldnt you?

Move on

You're not getting anything
Don't even tell them you're going elsewhere
They wont care
If they had any desire to take your money, they would have well before now

Drive to Boca. YM should be 3 months not 3 years.

Sadly PB is on to it. I got a pair within 3 months. Great great watch, under apprecited, but not in demand. A new AD will come through.

As another poster pointed out doing the same thing time and again whilst expecting a different outcome is the definition of insanity.

Change it up and be more bullish for the win, it's going to happen.

This is also totally valid if you can't be arsed schmoozing a new AD, you've wasted 3years already - break that down into additional cost per wear over that time........

YM 40 is one of the easiest to get at retail from an AD, so as others have said above go to other ADs. No way should you buy unwanted gold and diamond jewellery to try and get this watch.

There are plenty for sale, waiting three years to save a few bucks.
Really not worthwhile considering how many price increases on MSRP during this time ?

YM is great choice

3 years is a long time, but as a converse to the experiences above, I went into an AD in mid 21 to ask about an Explorer, SA was dismissive and not very accommodating so I thought nothing would come of it and pretty much forgot about it TBH, but I got a call from them offering me one in late 22.

Buy grey and if your watch comes in, sell one of them to get your original purchase price back.

Rhodium YM isn’t a particularly popular model, especially in this climate.

My feel is that one will come through for you sometime this year if you’re in no particular hurry.
