Here is a question that I have never seen on this forum. What would you do if you saw a post by either a newbie or a veteran poster that had a picture of his /her new purchase, and it was an incorrect watch...meaning totally fake or had a fake dial or band? Would you be the bearer of the bad news, complement them on their new purchase, or say nothing and move on?

He would be advised in a heartbeat, if I were sure. Otherwise I'd let someone else do it and then I'd pile on!

I would very gracefully raise the subject because that person should know and maybe he might be able to get his money back.

I think this would be the proper way to handle the situation, If i were the person with the watch i would want to know.

The reason I brought up the question is in addition to the outright fakes seen in auctions, there are an increasing number of watches that are put together from pieces that are bought separately. Relumed dials, non original but authentic dials, toned hands, service cases, aftermarket bezels, even to the extent of incorrect paper work... basically parts of authentic and non authentic rolex parts from different eras put together to make a watch. Recently I have seen a 1665 DRSD with a fake dial and a case back from the wrong era given that the serial number was a 3.7 mil. Another example, it would be very easy for an unsuspecting buyer to buy a late model 16800 Submariner with an authentic but incorrect flat matte dial with tritium markers. No one would be the wiser unless the serial number of the watch was made known. I recently considered buying a 1655 Exp II but the paper work was for a non chronometer movement. I am curious to know whether you all would let the new owner know that while his new watch is authentic it may be incorrect and tell him why.

It just happened recently. We let him know it was bogus, then he said he can have someone get him a real one anytime he wants (so there).
