First Luxury Watch - AP RO / VC Overseas / Patek

Hey there.

Planning to buy my first luxury watch from Watchbox's Dubai store (pre-owned). Goal is to get a popular model but one that doesn't lose too much value in the next big recession :)

Budget: $60K US, Flexible
Desired brands: Patek, AP or VC
Models: Popular ones like Nautilus, Royal Oak and Overseas. Appears Nautilus won't fit in my budget.
Value: Prefer not to pay "multiples" of retail. Been waiting for the pandemic hype to cool down.
Material: Precious metal works if better value than steel. With gold, would prefer rubber or leather bracelet to tone down the bling.

Been racking my brains for months on which model to get. Would appreciate any and all suggestions.

Huge VC fan here so I would go for the full rose gold 4500V in blue dial. It’s an absolute stunner in person! Very versatile watch with three straps so you can tone it down with the rubber or leather, and bling it out with the full bracelet.

I already own two Overseas, but if money wasn’t an option this would definitely be my next Overseas!

+1. This is around retail in the secondary market, and you can change up the strap as you feel on demand.

+2. Per your preferences and parameters, the gold 4500v would be your best value if you were to purchase 1 watch. Wear it on the bracelet one day and strap change to leather or rubber on another day.

For 2 watches within your budget/preferences/parameters, I like the idea of a SS 4500v Overseas and a 15300st. You get a watch with an iconic bracelet, and another with an excellent strap change system.

If all options can be had at retail price, would VC still be the suggestion? To me it is.

Unless you are talking about the ultra high end stuff like Ceramic or Openworked, then it’s
RO > Nautilus > Overseas.

If you are buying at grey market, then just get the Overseas. It’s the one with the least premium on the grey market so you will not lose too much once the market goes down.
Nautilus and RO is just not worth paying the market price.

I second this assessment.

Personally I don't like the current gen Overseas though. As 5711 remains out of OP's budget I'd get a 15300 (or a 15202 which is getting there fast). Obviously those may come down a lot more. The 15300 was a 10-15k watch for the longest time and the 50th craze is an afterthought now.

Just to add, popularity is a moving target. What may have been popular last year may not be popular next year. Best to buy what will get long-term love irrespective of popularity.

Second that, the 39mm discontinued RO offered the best size and buck.

At market, they are often "cheaper" than retail RO, with better sizing.

Take the 26300st and 25860st ROC for example. No weird date windows and a 39mm.

Does it have to be one of those three brands? In my opinion, the best way to avoid significant depreciation when buying pre-owned is to buy something that has already depreciated (rather than sells pre-owned at over MSRP). However that would have you looking at Blancpain, Breguet, JLC, GP, Zenith, and others.

Overseas has better finishing than RO and Naut not to mention interchangeable strap system and all the extra straps it includes and 3 times the water resistance of the royal oak
