What value does box and papers add to a watch??

Hi all. I am looking to buy another watch, I am spending around 2500$. I have been trawling the net looking for the right deal.

I have always tried to make sure that my purchases have boxes and papers, but I am finding it hard to find something at the right price.

So the question is, does box and papers add value or does it just it easier to sell the item?

I am not looking to sell the watch, but I may want to in the future.

Ofcourse its much easier to sell a watch with original papers and boxes. Take care of them m8! The warranty and the service history adds a lot of value to your watch makes its 100% legit and authentic.

lots of collectors insist on having the original box and papers and they do add a value to the package. Many others argue that you buy the seller, papers and boxes can be forged or be later additions.
IMO a recent Rolex service certificate would add more value for me as it would prove the recent authenticity of the watch and get some paperwork

In that price range, probably $50 - 100.

It really depends on the individual. It's easier to sell and nice to have all the goodies but you are really buy a watch to wear!

It amazes me how many watches are for sale with no box etc.. If I had spent that much on a watch I would be damned sure to keep hold of them.

I have seen a Turn-o-Graph for 2500, in excellent condition from a reputable source, but no box or papers - whats your thoughts?

its only a recent fad to keep box and papers, that's why with older watches they are harder to find all the time. If the price is right and you trust the seller go for it. You can always get it serviced by rolex and get a service certificate warranty to prove authenticity

Always!!

If he can buy a Rolex for $2,500 without box and papers, then I would guess that the watch with box and papers would cost at least $200 more.

You have to ask yourself what are the box and papers worth to you...

Hanging onto these bits is a very recent phenomenon and one I have trouble understanding....... That is why older vintage pieces with them are more valuable...there just aren't that many of them around, but today, there are so many around tht level of value will never be reached... That is also why there is such a market for "original papers and boxes" for everything on the net..whatever those are..

Now days, everybody saves the boxes for everything...toasters, dolls, tools, cameras....... and watches.... However, boxes and "papers" do not verify or authenticate anything, and if you are relying on that you will be burned.

If you go into a Authorized Dealer for a refurbished, authentic Rolex watch you will NOT get original papers or an original box..

If you are looking for something more than 10 years old...and for that price, you probably are; your chances of actually finding one with it's original packaging is pretty slim, and as Leo mentioned, sellers can only get 50 or a hundred bucks for them..

I say that it's not worth it unless you intend to have a perfect collection at some point.......... if it's authentic, keep your box and give me the watch for a hundred less..........

Being more of a watch collector, the watch is definitely much desirable if it has the "complete" package. To me, it proves that the watch is authentic and is certaily more desirable if it has everything that it originally came with rather than one that is just the watch. This is especially true for vintage watches that rarely have the original box and paperwork that it came with since it probably has gone through a number different owners. Those documents are usually lost through the process. In addition, a vintage watch that is complete usually tells me the owner or owners probably cared a lot about the watch to keep all the original documents and took good care of it. But in the end, its person to person but in general it's definitely easier to sell the watch with its complete package and in most observed cases, you can demand a higher price as well.

I really don't care too much about the original box and warranty document.

But I have to concede that it would be thoretically easier to sell it in the future if you have a full set. Since there are some that look at the watch alone (like me), others that want to collect boxes, papers, and booklets, it would stand to reason that your market in the future, if you decide to punt it, would be larger.

I'll put it this way.

I will not purchase a Rolex or any fine timepiece without the original package including tags, books, papers, boxes, and so on.

It's just my preference.

Being in a position of trying to sell without them - I wouldn't do it again in the future!

I bought my Rolex without box and papers making the assumption that I'd never want to sell it. Of course one month later I realized I wanted something that was a bit more water resistant, etc.

For a watch as valuable as a Rolex, anything that helps to authenticate it helps - significantly. So from my experience, I wouldn't purchase another Rolex without them again. Unless it's too good a deal to pass up, of course.

Cheers,

Ben

For me nothing just another item to store. If you are going to sell your watch in the future. I would say it is required.

Who needs a Loupe when you can use a cutout bottom from a Pepsi glass bottle.

I am not sure keeping the box for your Rolex is necessarily a new phenomenon. I am 43 and never kept the boxes of anything I was given as a child, or indeed anything I have bought since (with a few notable exceptions). However when I was given my Air-King in 1978, I new it was something special and still have box today complete with the invoice from Watches Of Switzerland in Bond Street for the princely sum of £181!
