Dial marked Tritium but really Luminova
O.K. guys, I like new looking dials.
There was for a while a Luminova replacement dial for the Rolex Explorer II 1655 that was marked below the 6 O'Clock mark "T Swiss < 25 T" so it gives the impression that the dial is tritium unless you were told by the seller it was luminova the photos would not indicate it was really tritium. However, what if you purchased this watch thinking it is tritium, but it is really luminova. Would you: (a) proceed and just put it down to experience. (b) proceed but if the buyer gives a bit of a discount, that is great. (c) back out of the deal and spend $5K more for an as good condition model with original dial and hands and original papers?

I think I know what your answer would be Steve, and it would be the same as mine. I would go for (c) back out of the deal and spend $5K more for an as good condition model with original dial and hands and original papers?
I have a feeling Pav would say the same, I think with option A and B there would be the niggle in the back of your mind reminding you that its not the original dial. The next possibility would be to take option A and B, acquire an original dial making it exactly what you are after, just depends on availability, I can imagine they would be quite rare, then again TRF is at your fingertips and I'm sure sourcing the real McCoy dial would only be a matter of time Dave.

Having never met you in person Dave, you know my tastes very well. I am a perfectionist who will pay more for a well preserved piece of history. (my obvious answer is C in this situation).
Steve, a replaced luminova dial needs to be disclosed by the seller in the for sale ad. Most honest sellers would be very upfront about that. If it was not disclosed IMO that is reason enough to back out of the deal. |

Steve, if you can source a 100% genuine dial I would go for it, as long as the watch is discounted the amount the replacement cost of the dial.
Pav would you know a ball park figure for the original dial?

I think those Tritium dials in the kind of zero patina condition that I like are very very difficult to find. Then the cost is US$2-3,000

I think that Pav you make a good point about the seller. He did disclose that the bracelet was incorrect, and showed a Rolex Invoice saying the watch had never been serviced. It was incumbent upon the seller to say the dial had been changed to luminova, especially when it was otherwise impossible to tell that it was luminova given it had the tritium notation markings on the dial marking.
Why me
