Getting the call after a terrible intro

I have a home in a city where I only spend a couple months out of the year. I decided to finally go to the AD in town. I met with an SA, and explained that I have a stellar relationship with an AD in Europe, and that I was not interested in any watches for myself, and that I understood the current climate. I explained that my wife is difficult, and needs to see stuff in person before making decisions, and she rarely travels overseas with me. I also explained that timeframe is of no importance, and I was not expecting anything quickly.

SA seemed completely incredulous that I was not interested in watches for myself. He keeps pestering me about models I am waiting for, so I tell him. He gets all frosty and says "We have never even had either of those references in our store." (one meteorite and one gemset) I replied with something along the lines of 'yeah, that's why I am not wasting your time for myself."

He seemed super suspicious and was borderline standoffish on everything I said. I told him that my wife was most interested in a TT DJ 36mm with champagne dial. I mention that this is not exactly the most difficult model to get, and that my AD in Europe told me that it may take a couple of months, but this would not be a problem at all. (Not to go off on a tangent, but the only two watches my store-manager SA told me that she will never be able to get me and to go gray are the WG DD40 with olive dial, and the Omega Snoopy lol)

SA then asks why I don't just buy it from my Europe AD. I nicely reminded him that my wife likes to see stuff in person, and that it would be nice to have a local-to-her AD. After he makes a comment that my AD may not be telling me the truth, I realize I am not getting anywhere with the little twerp, so I say my goodbyes.

Before my exchange with the Rolex SA, I had been browsing jewelry (separate SA and separate sections). I had met a nice SA and discussed the brands they sold. I mentioned that my wife was looking for a gold bracelet and that I would send her to see him sometime when she came into town. After the Rolex interaction, I went back to the jewelry SA and mentioned that my wife would come see him sometime, but unfortunately I did not hit it off with the Rolex rep and would rather strangle him than buy a watch from him. Jewelry SA was very professional, super apologetic about my experience and asked what model I was interested in. I mentioned the DJ36.

Maybe 2 months later out of the blue, the jewelry SA texts me that Rolex just received that DJ combo and asked me if he wanted me to have the manager put it aside. I had no purchase history with him, as my wife had not gone in yet to look at jewelry. But, he remembered our interaction and went out of his way to set me up with the manager there, even though the jewelry section is separately owned/operated from the Rolex AD. My wife went in and bought the watch, and really clicked with the jewelry SA. (She said 3 separate walk-ins tried to buy the DJ while she was waiting for the manager to help her.)

Be nice, people! It costs you nothing. You are not "prostituting yourself" or "debasing" yourself by being polite and charming, if you have the capacity.

Anyone else get the call and/or buy something from an AD that you were certain you would never hear from?

These statements seem mildly contradictory, no ?

Unless the real lesson here is: Be nice in the moment, then vent to someone else after .

Well, I went back to say goodbye to the jewelry SA and gave him my wife's name for the Boucheron-type bracelet she was interested in. He asked how my Rolex interaction went, I told him that the SA was a complete nitwit and that I wouldn't be working with him, but no big deal because I am already good with Rolex.

Not sure that is really venting...

I’m not sure why the SA did not jump on a ladies piece sale for your wife, I would have. Once upon a time these pieces were hard sells

Lucky you, I’m still on a wait list for the last two years, despite a polite intro
Congratulations to your wife

It was so strange. I was literally like “I come in peace and will never ask you for a gmt or Daytona.”

What makes it even weirder is that he seemed like it was unbelievable that my AD could get me a tt 36 datejust within a couple months, when his own store came through in the same amount of time. Lol

Oh, and I didn’t actually say annythinf about strangling an SA. I believe I did refer to him as a nitwit though lol.

That is a beautiful watch. I enjoyed your story, and completely agree that it certainly doesn't hurt to be nice! Congratulations to your wife on getting the watch she wanted!

Thankfully, I have the one and only Rolex that I have ever wanted -- a TT Everose Datejust with a Sundust stick dial. Literally just a few days before we contacted an AD, the Sundust dial had been discontinued on the DJ (it's still available on the 41mm, but not on anything smaller), and I didn't hold much hope of one still being available. The first AD we dealt with said there was no way in hell that I could get the Sundust dial, and that for any Rolex it would be at least a six-month-to-a-full-year wait. He also wanted payment in advance. Buh-bye. So, we contacted another AD. That amazing AD managed to snag what he said (and I believe him) was the very last one available in the entire USA. It was exactly one month to the day from the date of my first contact with the AD to the time it was on my wrist.

And one of my husband's brothers is a Certified Master Bench Jeweler, so he makes any jewelry I want. No need for my husband or me to ever set foot in another jewelry store!

I didn't read anything in your story that was especially "polite and charming". It seems to me that after the Rolex salesperson denied you used the jewlery department salesperson to get the Rolex you wanted.

I hit it off with a jewelery SA that I knew my wife would like.

Before my wife had a chance to go in and buy herself a gift from me for a special occasion, the jewelery SA reached out to me regarding the Rolex. Had he not asked me what model I was interested in, I would never have told him.

The point of the story was that if you are nice to someone with no expectations of anything, it may benefit you unexpectedly.

Lmao at me “using” a jewelry salesperson. We have come full circle!

Maybe you could have cut out the whole flex bit and just enquired about the DJ for your wife?

Yes, on four occasions (2x in 2017 and 2x in 2020) with no purchase history and not even walking into the store, but after making a friendly and polite phone call to inquire and express interest.

Jeez, some people can't just leave a win-win story alone. It may not be a hard watch to get, but he ended up buying the watch he wanted from a salesperson he liked.

I'm surprised no one has posted a link to the watch from a gray dealer for one dollar under MSRP.

Great that the other salesperson got on top of it, and delivered at that!!

My wife has a ‘21 DJ36 yellow gold/jubilee/champagne diamond dial/with factory diamond bezel and I have to say it really is quite the stunner in person !!

Not sure what exactly is the “flex bit.” Me telling the SA I have an excellent relationship shop with another AD? If so, I was wearing my SkyD and he asked about it.

Totally agree. My wife was only interested in two models: this one and a yellow gold DD36. She thinks those are the quintessential looking Rolexes and everything else is not, ha.

I suppose it rubs some people wrong when OP mentioned about being nice and then calling the SA a little twerp and wanting to strangle him.

Anyways, congrats OP. Very nice watch.

Thank you! My wife really likes it, reminds her of family members that are no longer with us.

Point taken though. That SA did say a couple super passive-aggressive things about my Euro AD that I am not sharing here. It's hard to convey tone via online forum, especially when you are trying to keep it short.

What in god's name are you going on about?? That's a watch which is very easy to get.
I hope your wife wears it in good health for many years to come but I genuinely don't understand what you are going on about.
