Is it time to buy?

Hey all ,

About 10 years ago I bought my first rolex from someone on this board. I bought a SS GMT 2. I bought it for 6700 and sold it over the summer for 11k.

Afterward, I bought an all gold breitling for 14k, ended up selling it because I wanted something a bit bigger (it was 39 mm) but a beautiful watch.

I like yellow gold. I’d love a presedential or all gold sub, but those will be too expensive for me at the moment. Is my next best bet a two tone datejust? I definitely don’t want stainless steel anymore.

And if this is the way to go, is it time to buy now or do you guys see the market sinking even more? I saw a 2020 two tone datejust champagne dial box and papers in my local Jewlery store for 13k. I like the watch, but I wouldn’t want to spend that money to find the values drop more in the future. Is this a decent deal?

If you want to buy new, you may find that your local AD has DJs on display ready to sell (that may be region of the country dependent) at the current MSRP. DJs seem to be creeping back into AD store displays for sale. If you want used, then you may still find something less expensive. I haven't investigated that watch. Have you compared that with other sellers of grey or used watches like eBay, Chrono24, etc to see what people are, at least, asking? You may see lower prices in the future, but how quickly do you want to buy?

No one has a crystal ball.

Do what you want with your money and be wary of advice from an Internet forum. If you are comfortable with the price, go ahead and buy, if you aren’t then don’t.

If you’re hoping to make a little cash if you decide you don’t want the watch after a few months, I think it will be a challenge.

Champagne dial Day date 36 in Yellow gold is already under water and can be had sub MSRP. The stock is mainly sitting ..

Stock market is going for a massive correction soon, so I would say to hold your fire until November 2023 - Spring 2024 if you can as there will be far better opportunities ..

The Rolex AD is the last place where you will get a good deal as they will try their best to keep the charade going and they have a lot of people on the lists they are now clearing fast since most of those on the lists are flippers that are having cold feet now that they realized there's no profits for them on most models like Datejusts or a plain sub

Two different questions.

Is it time to buy? Yes. Definitely.

But...not if it's a watch you're settling on b/c you can't or don't want to spend the money on what you really do want.

So...wait, save, and be patient, but most of all, don't settle. Good luck,

Why not just buy a watch you really like, can afford and want to wear and enjoy. That takes a lot of the financial nonsense out of watch ownership. If value retention or appreciation is vital your economic picture your money is far better off put somewhere else than a watch. This is a hobby which primarily should orient around use, utility, and style with funds which are totally expendable.

Hoping that, here in the US, going from the high of nearly 37,000 in 2022 down to it currently floundering in the 32-33,000 range was the massive correction.

Unknown. My guess is that secondary market prices will sink further, but what do I know?

In the first instance I would speak to my AD.

Only about availability new. I think it's probably not advisable to get into any discussion about secondary market prices with any AD. All these new watches are supposed to be sold only to lifetime keepers who should no interest in used prices. That may change as their certified used program is put in place but only if your comparing prices on a used piece they have.

A great time was when you could buy with 10-20% discount. Full MSRP should be the norm. It will probably be again with real interest rates...

Not going to buy anything from grey when it’s near to Watches and Wonders event. It’s the time of the year where speculations on discontinuation inflates the prices.
