Cleaning

So, I was lucky enough to obtain a 1550 Gold Rolex date watch. The watch itself is in very good condition. So, the question I have for everyone is, how do you clean and do you polish it?

Cleaning - If you aren't sure if its 100% waterproof, I would just use a damp soft cloth so you don't risk any water getting into it.

Polish - I don't bother, yours looks fine to leave for a number of years. If you do want to polish down the road, let an expert do it or if you feel comfortable doing small parts yourself, I hear good things about Cape Cod cloths. Just dont make it a habit as you dont want to remove a ton of material or distort the finish by doing it improperly.

Cleaning is little more than warm soapy water and clean soft clothes.

As to "polishing", it is a misused word on the forum when folks really mean "refinishing". In the case here, this watch has actually been polished and not refinished. Polished is not a typical finish for all parts of the watch.

When it comes to cosmetics it's your choice. Nothing wrong with a watch that has been cared for and "polished/refinished" either to factory specs or the way you like it.

Watch looks clean and in no need of polishing. In regards to daily grime cleaning I agree a soft damp cloth or old t shirt is all you need to wipe it down.

As per the other thousand posts, about cleaning a lot in America seem to use a soap similar to fairy and a tooth brush.

Some say optical / glass wipes

For pcls or polished parks Cape cod

Search cleaning covered so many times

Don’t use Cape Cod if you don’t know what you are doing.

As others have mentioned, confirm the watch is water tight and have a local shop do a pressure test on it. Then simply use the dish soap and warm water to wash and clean the watch (soft toothbrush will help). I bought some WristClean spray that I use to clean my watches with, and I like it better, but many will tell you it is the same as soap and water.

Polishing, no need, just wear it. When the time comes to service it, they will do a refinish for you.

And as far as using your tshirt to clean it up, don't. The tshirt and shirt materials can leave hairline scratches on highly polished surfaces after a while. Use tshirt to wipe the crystal, but not the polished areas like polished bezel.

Watch head in warm water with dish soap, bracelet in the ultra sonic.
All watchmakers and jewelers use an ultra sonic, very cheap kit and you’ll be amazed by the grime which comes out of an already very clean looking bracelet.

Make sure you know it passes a pressure test before dunking it in any liquid solution.

I’m sure anyone suggesting submerging it for cleaning would agree.
