Yes there is - the 9001 didn't have the Chronergy escapement. The 9002 does.

Are there any visually noticeable differences? Like the current gen gmts have a crown at the dial at 6 while the previous doesn’t, etc..?

There are differences. None that matter to me but some may have a preference. The Rolex website lists the differences between the 9001 and 9002 movements in the Sky Dweller section under New Releases.

"Rolex caliber 9002 (2023) is an evolution of the original 2012 caliber 9001. It includes technical innovations that Rolex has brought to its movements – Chronergy escapement, Paraflex shock absorbers and a new oscillating weight with an optimized ball bearing."

It is very likely that they are preparing the mechanism for a transparent case back.

Basically, they downgraded the movement so that it could develop the same issues that afflict all the 32XX calibers.

Yes- the new version has the Rolex crown on both sides of the 6 oclock hour marker (next to where it says Swiss Made), whereas the older version does not have crowns there, only the wording.

I was thinking along these lines. Although in fairness, none of my 32 based watches have misbehaved. I'm still glad I've got the 9001 in mine.
